You were out grocery shopping with Dick. Occasionally, he'd be a little untamed. By then, he was kissing your cheek and wrapping his arms around your waist as you pushed the cart. "Dick," you muttered, trying to nudge him into realizing he was making people uncomfortable.
He raised a brow. "That's my name, baby," you smirked. He cupped your cheek and placed a gentle kiss on your lips, knowing it would leave a mark in your mind.
You pushed the grocery cart into the next aisle.
Slowly, you reached for a box of fruit loops. But it slipped out of your hands, falling to the ground. "Oh, I got it, love." He got down, and as he seemed to grab it, he purposely fell down to his knees.
"Dick, are you alright?" You asked. He flashed his "I'm about to do something, and you'll like it, but others won't" grin.
Dick put his slender fingers through the belt loops of your jeans and pulled you closer to him. "Baby, you drive me mad." Dick's voice was low and raspy, almost coming out as a whisper.
Your eyes widened. "Dick," you murmured. His hands slid under your shirt, tracing and mapping every part of your upper half.

Summary: Dick and Babs just broke up, on the eve of an undercover mission requiring the cover to be as a couple. Luckily, Dick knows somebody who can step into Babs's place.

"It's a three month minimum undercover mission. I completely understand if you're not up for it, but... I was hoping you'd be willing to take it on."
I stared holes in my kitchen wall, immensely grateful that Dick couldn't see my face right now. I kept the phone to my ear even though my good friend and vigilante buddy was finished speaking, now just waiting for my response. I felt more and more awkward with every second that passed, but I just couldn't bring myself to respond.
Dick was set to leave tomorrow morning for a massive, in-depth undercover mission to infiltrate a seriously dangerous group that a few of us had been keeping our eyes on. The cover required Dick and another person to go as a couple, acting completley and perfectly in love for the next few months. Until about a week ago, the plan had been perfectly set for him to go with Barbara Gordon, our mutual friend and his long-time girlfriend.
But then, just over a week ago, he and Barbara had broken up.
They were both fairly mature people, and had been friends long before they started dating, so there hadn't been much drama. Every single member of our group of friends and vigilantes had been relieved about that, not least of all because Dick and Barbara were essential leadership members of our teams, and a messy breakup would've been rough for more than just them. But, understandably, as a result of the breakup, they didn't want to go through with this undercover misison together, pretending to be a happy couple for months when their relationship had just ended.
I'd been part of conversations in passing troubleshooting what to do, but since I hadn't really had a role in the original plan, I hadn't paid much attention to the replanning. Now, it was all I could think about on a loop, since Dick had just asked me to go with him in Barbara's place.
I could tell from Dick's tone when he'd asked that he'd been worried about inconveniencing me on such short notice, especially since a few of our other friends had already tapped out due to scheduling conflicts. I was perfectly able to change my plans to go with him; scheduling was the least of my worries.
Instead, the number one concern dominating my mind was the absolutely gigantic, secret crush I'd been harboring on Dick for years. I'd been head over heels in love with the guy for a long time now, and the thought of spending months faking a relationship barely a week after he'd broken up with his girlfriend, another good friend of mine, made me sick to my stomach with nerves.
"Look, I know it's bad timing," Dick continued, apparently taking my absolute silence as indecision and not panic. "I'll understand if you can't make it work. But... if there's any chance you can get free, it would save the mission. You're just about my last hope of finding somebody who can see this through with me."
I let out a long sigh through my nose. This was a bad, stupid idea. But Dick needed my help, and I didn't want to leave him hanging. Besides, this mission was about more than a stupid crush. We were going after an organization doing legitimate harm to people, and if we didn't take this shot at taking them down, who knew when the next one might come along?
"Alright," I said, forcing the word out before I could second-guess myself anymore. "Alright, I'll do it."
"Really?" The joy and relief in Dick's voice made my heart do a backflip, and I shook my head at myself. "Thank you, so much. I'll come pick you up in the morning so we can head out. Is that enough time for you to pack and get everything in order?"
"Yeah, it should be," I said, fighting to keep the resignation and regret out of my tone. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Perfect! I'll bring your favorite coffee order."
I could practically hear the adorable wink in his voice that I loved to see in person as he hung up the phone. I let out a long, heavy sigh and set my own phone face down on the counter. This was a terrible idea. But it was too late to back out now.
I needed to pack.
****************
True to his word, Dick knocked on my door bright and early the next morning. I'd been pretty unable to sleep last night thanks to my brain overthinking the decision I'd just made, but on the bright side, it meant I'd had plently of time to pull off the perfect packing job. When I opened my door to find Dick grinning, an extra coffee in-hand for me, I was already ready to go.
"Good morning," he said, fixing me with the smile that never failed to make my heart race. "Here's your coffee, as promised."
I did my best to smile back as I took the cup from him, one bag already slung over my shoulder.
"Thanks."
"Thank you. For... probably obvious reasons, Babs and I really weren't in a place to do this mission together. If you hadn't been willing to step in on such short notice, we would've been in serious trouble."
"...Glad I could help."
"Here, let me give you a hand with your bags."
It didn't take more than one trip for Dick and I to get everything loaded in "our" car. For the sake of our cover, we were driving over to the gorgeous resort we'd be staying at together in this rental, in character from the moment we got within a few miles of the place.
I paused for just a second outside the passenger side door before joining Dick. I was not going to let this stupid crush compromise our mission, especially not when I knew Dick was still processing a major breakup. We'd been alone plenty of times before, we'd been friends for years. Sure, it would be a little different to act like a couple, but I made myself a promise then and there that I wouldn't let myself get carried away. For my sake, and for Dick's.
****************
"So, how long have you two been together?"
Dick and I shared a look, and I knew neither of us had to fake the warm smile spreading on both of our faces. For the sake of creating a cover we could stick to easily, Dick and I had kept a lot of truth in our fake story, including things like when we'd met. Dick already had one arm around my waist, but he pulled me in tighter to his side as he answered the question for both of us without breaking my eye contact.
"Almost two years now. Although, we've known each other a lot longer."
"Since we were kids."
Dick's hand gently squeezed my waist, and my heart felt like it was about to burst from the warm glow this man seemed to cause with just a single look. We really had been in each other's lives a long time now; we'd been each other's constants through quite a lot of change and challenge.
Which was why I forced myself to take a deep breath and a half-step back from our cover as a couple as Dick turned away to face the people in front of us. We'd been here for almost two months now, and at first, I'd been doing fine with separating reality from the fake story we were trying to sell everyone else. But in the last few weeks, something just felt... different.
I knew it was in my head, but more recently, when Dick gazed into my eyes to sell that we were deeply in love, it felt like there was an energy and a truth there that hadn't existed before. When he kissed me to maintain our cover, he never lingered, but in the past few weeks the small pecks seemed to stretch out for an extra few milliseconds more than they necessarily needed to, especially when Dick's arms were around me.
I took a careful sip of the drink in my hand as I forced my attention back to the couple in front of us. Dick had been carrying the entire conversation, which wasn't fair to him. He was an outstanding performer, and I needed to stop buying into our own press. It was a fine line to walk while we were quite literally in the belly of the beast, at a massive party with all of the targets we'd been gathering information on for months, but in the back of my head I chanted a little reminder to myself: "friend friend friend friend friend".
"Well, the two of you certainly make a sweet couple," said the woman in front of us with a smile. "We're glad you were able to join us here."
"We are, too," I said, returning her smile. "It's been a wonderful experience, and some great time for the two of us to get to spend together."
"But now, if you'll excuse us," Dick broke in with one of his trademark grins, pulling me a few steps to the side with him, "we're just dying to go dance."
The couple we'd been speaking to waved us away with adoring smiles, and my heart skipped a beat as Dick whirled us onto the dance floor, his arms wrapped tightly around me. We'd spent plenty of Wayne Galas dancing the night away like fools, but never this intimately. The chant in my head died down despite my best efforts.
Dick and I swayed to the music, his arms wrapped tightly around my waist as I rested my hands on his shoulders. Slowly, he leaned in closer, and my heart did a backflip. He brought his mouth right up to my ear, and I swear I was on the verge of cardiac arrest until he spoke.
"I just got a message from Wally. We got all the evidence we need, and they're about to break in here and take down the whole room."
I bit my lip, trying to ignore the pit of disappointment opening in my stomach. We'd done our jobs, and unless something went wrong in the next few moments, we were about to get some very bad people out of a position to do harm. The last thing I should have been feeling was disappointment.
"They're gonna need some kind of distraction while they put the last touches into place, especially for the security guys around the room. I've got an idea, but I need you to go with it, okay?"
I nodded, even though my clenching heart told me this was a bad, bad idea.
"I trust you."
Dick's hands squeezed my waist, and then he was spinning me, out and away from him. I let him lead, trusting him and trusting myself to know what to do when the time came. The music around us swelled to a finale for this song, and Dick had worked us right into the middle of the room. He dipped me, then held my hands tightly once I was standing upright in front of him again. As the last notes faded throughout the room, he dropped to one knee before me.
The gasp I let out was real. Everyone around the room echoed it. If Wally needed a distraction, Dick had found the perfect way to do it.
I quickly threw my hands up to my face, mirroring the normal reaction and also giving myself some room to get in the zone. Dick just smiled up at me, his face practically radiating love and affection.
"My love... I've been waiting for the right time to do this, and I can't think of a better one than now." The phrase was enough to help me get back in the zone, if only slightly. This was the best time for a fake proposal, as a distraction for our friends. "You make me the happiest man alive. I can't think of anyone else I'd rather spend the rest of my life with. So... would you do me the absolute honor of agreeing to marry me?"
I huffed a little laugh, letting a smile creep onto my face as my hands dropped. I knew how to sell the act, and more importantly, I'd managed to keep it straight in my head that we were acting.
"Yes. Baby, a thousand times yes! I love you so much."
Dick grinned, popping a up from where he'd been kneeling and sliding a ring I recognized as one of his own onto my finger. In a pinch, it'd work as a fake engagement ring, especially since if everything went according to plan, no one in the room would get the chance to look at it up close.
Cheers errupted around us as Dick finished giving me the ring. I smiled up at him, expecting that to more or less be the end of things, but then he wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me tightly into his chest. His other hand came up to cup the back of my neck, and he pulled me into a deep, searing kiss unlike anything we'd ever done for our cover so far.
An absolutely tiny part of my brain argued that this was all part of creating a distraction that would do its job and distract for as long as our team needed to get in here. But the rest of me disagreed. This kiss, the way he held me, felt different. We'd been faking it for two months, I knew what that felt like. But as Dick held me to him and kissed me like the world was ending, there was a spark of something real and wonderful that I knew I wasn't imagining.
In the back of my mind, I recognized the sounds of shouting and glass shattering from the room around us. I blocked out all of them as Dick slowly pulled away from me, his eyes locking onto mine. I just stared back, my mouth slightly open. No doubt, our cover was broken now as our friends descended on the place, and yet the soft look in Dick's eyes didn't fade for an instant. He breathed my name, but then a shout that sounded like Wally came from across the room, and the moment broke. Dick turned to look in the direction of the noise, then dropped his hands from my waist and rushed into the fray with nothing more than a quick glance back at me.
I felt like someone had driven a knife into my heart and was wiggling it around with reckless abandon, but I forced myself to lock down the emotions, at least for a moment. Our friends were fighting to get and keep control of the room, and they needed all the help they could get.
Thankfully, I'd been working with this team as a vigilante for long enough that it came back to me perfectly naturally, even while my emotions were trying to take me out then and there. Gradually, we managed to get control of the room, securing all the bad guys Dick and I had been scouting for months. Once the action calmed down, I searched the room for Dick, intending to pull him aside and talk to him. Honestly, I'd been expecting him to be looking for me to do the same thing. But instead, I found him across the room, his attention completely focused on Barbara.
I bit down on my tongue so hard I almost drew blood. That knife in my heart had dug in deeper than I'd thought possible. I turned away, using the cover of cleaning up the mess in the room to hide my face from my friends, and tried to get a hold of myself. It's not like Dick and I were anything real. He'd just gotten out of a long term relationship, and everything we'd been doing for the past two months was supposed to be fake. Even if I'd thought I felt something different in that last kiss... it might not have meant anything to Dick.
I focused on taking deep breaths as I helped Wally, Dick, and the rest of our team wrap up the last loose threads on our mission. I kept trying to catch Dick's eye, but he refused to even look at me, which hurt about a thousand times worse than seeing him go running to Barbara. I loved both of them, and I didn't want to let my emotions convince me to do something I'd regret, so I took off at the first opportunity, saying I was exhausted and needed to rest. Thankfully, none of my friends called me on it.
Dick barely seemed to notice at all.
****************
After getting some breathing room from Dick and the illusion we'd created for the sake of our mission, I still couldn't shake the feeling that something had been different in that last kiss. Even if it didn't mean anything to Dick, even if he felt it was a mistake and wasn't interested in me the way I'd been interested in him, I knew we needed to talk about it. This radio silence would turn into a friendship-crushing awkwardness that I honestly couldn't take.
I called Dick two days after we got home from our mission to ask him to come over or grab coffee for a conversation, but he'd brushed me off with a lame excuse. I'd tried to set something up with him or else catch him at one of our training bases another dozen times over the next few weeks, but he just kept ducking me. It was incredibly unlike him, but after so many attempts, I took the hint. There really wasn't much else I could do. Whatever was going on with him, whatever had been behind that last kiss on our mission, Dick clearly wanted nothing to do with me now.
I debated talking to one of our other friends about it. If he kept avoiding me for too much longer, maybe I would. But eventually I decided that if he wanted space that badly, then I would give it to him.
I'd gone about three days after making that resolution before I'd broken down. I sat at my kitchen counter, drafting and redrafting a message to send to Dick to hopefully open the door between us again to talk and be friends like normal, before this mission had made things so weird. I didn't even care if he didn't feel the same way about me romantically, or if he wanted to say I'd been hallucinating whatever I'd felt during that last kiss. I just wanted my friend back.
I'd just gotten to a draft of my message that I didn't absolutely hate every word of when a knock came at my door. I frowned. I hadn't been expecting anybody, and honestly, I didn't want to be interrupted in the middle of drafting this stupid message lest I chicken out for another few days.
I stood up with a sigh to check the peep hole, then froze solid when I saw Dick on the other side. Even worse, he had a boquet of flowers in his hand. Whatever that was about, my brain and body were telling me I was way too nervous to ever know.
I was just contemplating whether I could get away with pretending not to be home, all the courage to do with the message draining away at the thought of having to say it to him in person, when he called my name from the other side of the door.
"I know you're home," he continued. "And honestly, I understand if you don't want to talk to me right now, but... I'd really like the chance to explain myself."
That, at least, got my attention. I took a deep breath, then slowly opened the door, revealing Dick on the other side. He gave me a smile as soon as he saw me, but it was much weaker than I was used to. Honestly, he looked more nervous than I'd ever seen him before.
"Thanks for opening the door," he said. He held the flowers out to me, and gingerly I took them. "Do you, uh... do you mind if I come in?"
"Of course not," I said, sighing a little as I stepped aside to make room for Dick. A bit of the tension in his shoulders seemed to fade at my words, and he stepped past me into my apartment. I shut the door, planning to ask if he wanted something to drink before we both settled in for whatever this conversation was going to be, but Dick beat me to the punch.
"Listen, I want to start by saying I'm sorry for disappearing on you." He spoke emphatically, standing in the middle of my entryway, his eyes locked completely on mine. Apparently we were doing this now. "I needed some time and some space to figure things out, but I'm sorry if I hurt you in any way in the process."
I cleared my throat and shrugged, setting the flowers down and then crossing my arms.
"Well, let's see. After spending two months together joined at the hip, you kissed me... like that, and then turned around and disappeared on me with a bunch of lame ass excuses for why you didn't have time to see me. Yeah, Dick, whatever that was, it hurt."
He grimaced, but took a step closer to me all the same.
"I'm sorry. I could've handled myself better. But..." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, looking away from me for the first time since he'd gotten here. I just raised an eyebrow and waited for whatever he decided to say next. When he met my eyes again, he looked a little at war with himself. "...I need you to promise me something."
I huffed a little laugh. "Seriously? Dick, you said you wanted to come in and explain something, so let's start there."
He just shook his head. "I need you to promise me that our friendship won't be affected. Alright? If I promise you that I won't make it weird, I need you to promise me you'll at least try to do the same."
"Dick, there is only one of us in this room who's made the friendship weird recently, and it's you. But... fine. I promise."
Dick let out a sigh of relief, then straightened up as he met my eyes.
"While we were on our mission... I started to feel like I wanted what we were pretending to do to be real. I realized I liked holding you, and kissing you, and having people look at us and know we were together. And as a result, I let myself get carried away when I kissed you on the last night of our mission. And I'm sorry for that."
I just stared back at him, my brain working overtime to try to process what he'd just said. I don't know what I'd been expecting, but a confession that my long-time friend and crush had spent the two months of our mission wrestling the same feelings I'd been struggling with? That hadn't been it.
Although, it was certainly a nice surprise.
"Dick..." I breathed, trying to decide where to start with what he'd just said. He broke back in before I got the chance to decide.
"It's okay if you don't feel the same way," he said quickly. "I don't mean to put pressure on you. But... I didn't feel like I could keep that secret from you, especially after that kiss."
The smallest hint of a smile pulled its way onto my face despite myself.
"You don't need to apologize," I said. "Not for that, anyway. I... ugh, I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but I've had feelings for you for... a long time. I didn't mind that kiss one bit."
Dick's eyebrows shot up. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah, really. It's why I was so hesitant to take the mission in the first place. But we didn't really have another option to go get those guys, and I've gotten pretty good at shoving those feelings away and focusing on our friendship instead, so... here we are, I guess."
Now it was Dick's turn for a little smile. His seemed to be incredibly relief-driven, although we weren't totally out of the woods yet.
"That's incredible to hear," he said. "Seriously, I was getting worried I'd crossed a line and destroyed our friendship."
"Is that why you've been avoiding me?" I asked. "Because if so, Dick, you should've just talked to me-"
"No, that's not why. At least, not entirely." I raised an eyebrow, and Dick took another deep breath before continuing. "I'm sure I don't have to remind you, I just got out of a pretty long relationship with Barbara. When we'd started our mission especially, it'd only been a week."
"Yeah," I said, trying to keep the storm of emotions that memory brought on from showing on my face. "I remember."
Dick gave me a knowing little smile, then continued.
"Well, about halfway through our undercover mission... that's when I started feeling more than the usual friendship feelings about you. It felt real and right and like something I wanted to pursue, but... Barbara was my first long-term relationship. The two have us have known each other forever, and even though we parted on good terms, it still felt a little... weird, to just be moving on like that. And I care about you. A lot. I didn't want to make a mistake and end up hurting you. I wanted to be sure that my feelings were real, and not just a side effect of the breakup or our proximity and cover. I wanted to make sure I didn't treat you like a rebound. So, I ran when the mission finished, to get some space and to think. Maybe I could've handled that part better, but by the end of our two months, I was seriously starting to lose it holding feelings back, so... I couldn't think of a better way to handle things in the moment."
"...And? You took all that time and space, what did you figure out?"
The faint smile returned to Dick's face, along with the usual easy confidence I knew so well. He closed the last of the distance between us, gently taking my hands in his, and I let him.
"I figured out that these feelings I have for you are a lot more than a rebound, or proximity driven, or whatever else. I took some time to process, especially the stuff to do with Babs, and I feel good about why and how we ended. It was the right choice, for both of us, and we're both better for it. And most importantly, I think my next right choice is you. I'm just happier when I'm around you. My heart feels warmer when I get to hold you in my arms. You almost sent me into cardiac arrest with your outfit on the last night of our mission. So, if you feel the same way... I'd really like to be your boyfriend. Or at least take you on a date, if you want to start slower."
"I... I'm not going to lie, I kind of feel like I'm hallucinating right now."
Dick laughed. "I hope you at least feel like it's a positive hallucination?"
"Oh, definitely. Not one that I want to end by any means."
"Good. Then... is that a yes? To a date?"
I smiled, meeting Dick's eyes as my heart did backflips. "That's a yes to dating. Exclusively, if you're at that point, too."
"Absolutely I am. I'm... so happy to hear you say that."
I grinned. "I mean, I do feel like we're a little past first-date territory. Sure, we haven't technically been on one yet, but all the traditional first date activities are relationship markers we passed years ago. I already know all about your hometown, favorite color, and secret vigilante lifestyle."
Dick laughed again, letting go of my hands to wrap his arms around my waist and pull me into his chest instead. My heart was practically beating out of my chest, and when I brought one hand up to rest on Dick's chest, I could feel that his was, too.
"You know, I might not count 'secret vigilante lifestyle reveal' as a first date milestone," he teased. I hummed, pretending to think on the issue.
"I don't know, Dick. I mean, that's a pretty big potential dealbreaker you might want to get out of the way early-"
I stopped my teasing short as Dick moved forward, bringing his lips to mine for a real kiss, no undercover pretense attached. I melted into him, everything else in the world instantly fading to irrelevance. Despite our long history as friends, it really was too early for some things, including using the "L" word. But that didn't mean I didn't feel it, heart and soul. The past few months had been a constant emotional rollercoaster, but no matter what came next, this moment and this budding relationship with Dick made everything else worth it in my book.

A New Start [Part 2]
Detective Dick Grayson x Fem!Reader
A/N: I just want to say I appreciate all the positive feedback for the first part. This is my first time writing a fanfic, so I hope you guys like this part as much as the last.
Summary: As Y/N and Dick begin to build a connection between one another, a new problem comes up that sets them at odds.
Warnings: Profanity, mentions of violence
Tumblr media
After Y/N and Dick’s little heart to heart moment, they proceeded to go to work on the ongoing robbery investigation. As she sat at her desk and scanned through the evidence files Dick had given her, she allowed her mind wonder off to a more interesting topic.
Y/N felt at ease now that she had managed to get on her partner’s good side, but she also began to have other feelings towards him. She could tell from that small interaction that he has seen and been through a lot of bad stuff, just like her. On one side, he has this kind of edge that tells you he’s not the kind of person you want to mess with. On the other side, he is compassionate and caring for those who he feels a connection with.
Y/N allowed herself to remain zoned out as she continued to think about Dick. What is he like outside of work? What does he enjoy doing in his spare time? Does he have a girlfriend? These intrusive thoughts clouded her mind to the point where she didn’t notice her partner was out of his chair and packing his things to leave. Dick, putting his coat on and throwing his bag over his shoulder, let out a deep sigh and turned to look over at Y/N.
“Well Y/N, it was nice to meet and talk to you, I’m heading out for the night. See you first thing in the morning alright?” He waited until she rose her head up to give her a warm smile.
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.” She smiled back and watched as he started towards the door.
Y/N watched as Dick walked out the front doors, feeling slightly ashamed by the impact he seemed to have on her although they just met. Despite her feelings, she decided that she wouldn’t try to act on them. After losing her old partner, she felt that it would be best to avoid getting too close to her new partner. She couldn’t handle losing another partner, let alone one that she cared deeply about.
“Working late tonight new girl?” A woman’s voice caused Y/N to turn around and meet the eyes of an officer, who appeared to be on her way out as well.
“Oh no. I’m just preparing for tomorrow, hopefully we’ll be able to find a lead in the case.” Y/N waved to the officer, receiving a thumbs up in response as the woman continued walking.
Y/N had left shortly after, returning to her mediocre apartment in a semi-decent neighborhood not too far away from the station. She did her usual nightly routine and called it a night, prepared for the busy day tomorrow.
It was now morning time and Y/N was standing in front of her long mirror giving herself a once over. She made a few changes to her usual plain black and white wardrobe, adding a bit more color. She convinced herself that it was only part of her journey to turn a new leaf. Satisfied with her new look, she grabbed her keys and the personal items she wanted to decorate her new desk with and headed out to work. Arriving to the police department a few minutes later, Y/N entered the building with a gleeful smile on her face like yesterday. Her smile dropped as soon as she saw what appeared to be an empty precinct. Confused and concerned, she went over to her desk to set her things down then heard the captain’s voice calling out for her.
“Detective Y/L/N! We’re all in the meeting room waiting for you.” She sped to the meeting room, where she could see everyone had already taken a seat, and Captain Nelson was standing behind the podium in front of everyone. In the very front, sat a tired-looking Dick with a cup of hot coffee in his hand. Y/N took the empty seat next to him, still confused about the unplanned meeting.
"Morning partner." Dick says softly as he sips his coffee, taking notice to his partner’s appearance being much more vibrant than the day before.
"Good morning, Dick. What's all this about anyway?"
"No clue.” Dick kept his eyes on Y/N as she looked around the room, still trying to make sense of what was happening. Their attention was quickly grabbed by the captain, who was ready to start the meeting.
"Now that everyone's here, I'd like to inform you all about a potentially new problem we'll have to face in the near future." Everyone watched the captain as he turned on the monitors behind him. On the screen were two surveillance shots of a man dressed in a red and green kevlar suit with a black mask on his face. He appeared to be in the middle of fighting a group of men.
"We got a call last night about some caped crusader single handedly fighting six men all by himself. By the time our people got there, they found all six men bloody and badly beaten. The vigilante was nowhere to be found."
Y/N couldn't believe her eyes. She had only heard stories about him, but never thought she would end up in the same city as him.
"Holy shit...is that Robin?" Y/N said as stood up to get a better view of the monitor, still in disbelief. Dick quickly turned to glare at her, surprised she was able to identify the person in the images so fast.
 He chose to remain silent and observe the reactions of his colleagues. They were all expressing a disapproving attitude, some of them even cracked jokes about the suit. All except for Y/N, who seemed to be thrilled by the revelation, almost like she was a fan. Dick tuned out everyone around him and focused only on Y/N, who only spoke highly of Robin.
“You guys can say what you want but that guy is badass. To take on six guys all by himself is unreal! I wonder if Batman is here too or if he came by himself.”
"Don't know, and don't care. I refuse to let these mask wearing freaks come into my city and do whatever the hell they want. They think they can do our jobs better than us, but what happened last night wasn't justice. I want to know why he targeted them specifically.” Captain Nelson was clearly a part of the disapproving crowd, cutting off the monitor and stepping from behind the podium to assign the new task.
“Detectives Kurt and Rodriguez, I’m assigning you both to the vigilante case. The rest of you, continue with the robbery investigation and report to me as soon as you find a lead. Thank you, dismissed.” Y/N and Dick left out of the meeting room together, both watching Kurt and Rodriguez complain about the new assignment on the way back to their desks.
“You seeing these guys? Just ungrateful. I would kill to take on a case like that.” Y/N turned to Dick, quietly walking alongside her. He just flashed a smile and continued walking. She noticed that he hadn’t really said anything during the entire meeting, but she just assumed that he was indifferent to the vigilante stuff.
They both went back to their desks and started working. Y/N couldn’t take her mind off of Robin and Dick couldn’t take his mind off of Y/N. He wondered how she would react if she knew that he was the man underneath the mask. Y/N on the other hand wondered about the motive Robin had to go after those men like that. They clearly weren’t good guys, but there are bad guys all over the city. Why them? Why now? The more she thought about it, the more she became invested in the case itself.
 Y/N took a quick look around to see if anyone was close enough to see what she was doing. Once the coast was clear, she used her computer to access the arrest records of the men who were detained after the Robin situation. All five of the men’s mugshots were displayed on her monitor and she could see the damage Robin had done to these guys, but there was one missing. She knew that his injuries must have been so severe that he had to be hospitalized.
“What if this guy was the target and the rest of them were just collateral damage?” She muttered to herself, slowly piecing the mystery together. Her thoughts were interrupted by Dick slamming his notebook on the desk in front of her. Before she had a chance to react, Dick was already hovering over her, expressing his newfound enthusiasm.
“I got it Y/N. This is our lead right here I just need you to-” Dick stopped as soon as he laid eyes on Y/N’s monitor. She was looking into the guys he beat to a pulp last night. Panic started to set in as he recalled her being listed as a proficient level detective in her files. He felt like there was a good chance she could uncover his secret, so he had to do whatever it takes to keep her from being successful.
“Y/N, we need to focus on the case that was assigned to us. No going off on our own, remember?”
“I know and I’m sorry, but I just-”
“Don’t let your curiosity get the best of you. If I catch you looking into the Robin stuff any further, I’ll have to report you to Nelson. Trust me, pissing off the captain is the last thing you want to do.” Dick’s tone came off much sterner than he wanted it to, but he needed her to get off the Robin thing as soon as possible. Part of him felt guilty as he watched her remove the photos of the men from her screen, her silence and sullen expression said more than enough.
“I’m going to take our lead to the captain and see what he says. If it’s good enough, I could get the green light to hold a stakeout.” Y/N sat in silence, staring at Dick while he briefly explained how he got some intel from someone he knows about a location where the stolen money is being stored.
She wasn’t giving him any sign of affirmation, making it clear that she wasn’t happy with him. Dick took the hint and walked off to the captain’s office. She felt like he was overreacting about her looking into the Robin case, but he was right about her not being focused on the task at hand. After sitting and thinking to herself for a few minutes, she made the conscious decision to give her full attention to the robbery case. But first, she wanted to know the name of the sixth man involved in the case. Y/N put her eyes on Kurt and Rodriguez, who were both sitting at their desks, presumably discussing the case. She figured all she had to do was go ask them for the guy’s name, but as soon as she got up to approach them Dick was already on his way back. She sat back down in her chair and acted natural as Dick came to stand on her side of the desk, towering over her again.
"Nelson gave us the green light for the stakeout. We should exchange numbers since we’ll be doing this together, in case anything happens.” Dick pulled his phone from his back pocket, unlocking and holding it out to her. Y/N obliged, saving her number into his phone. She looked back up at him to give him his phone back and watched as he parted his lips to speak.
“Also, I want to apologize about the threat I made earlier. I just really want to get through this case Y/N, I’ve been busting my ass these past few weeks trying to catch these guys.”
“Dick, I totally understand. I’m sorry too, and the bird boy is off limits from now on, I promise.”
“Oh, that’s a good one.” Dick and Y/N shared a laugh before falling into a moment of silence. The prolonged eye contact between the two spoke volumes to one another. There was something there that neither one of them wanted to acknowledge at the time, especially since they were about to spend a few hours alone together the very next day. Y/N turned away first, trying to find something to do in effort to ease the tension.
“Okay, I’m just gonna-”
“Yeah, me too.” Dick hastily turns away and moves back over to his desk, plopping down into his chair and raising his hands to hold the back of his head. He stared blankly at his computer screen, trying desperately not to shift his eyes over to his partner.
As much as he wanted to fight his growing attraction for Y/N, he couldn’t. After a failed relationship with Dawn, he promised himself that he wouldn’t get involved with another woman for a while, that is, until Y/N showed up. She just had to be his type, confident, strong-willed, and intelligent. Her unknowingly being fascinated with him and his ‘extracurricular activities’ only made his feelings stronger, along with the fear of her finding out and possibly ruining his acquaintance with her.
On the other side of the desk, Y/N quietly tended to the decorations she brought from home, trying to keep her mind and eyes off the alluring man sitting a couple feet away from her. It wasn’t long before her attention was claimed by said man, who made her look at her left at a fellow detective, who had his right hand in the back of his pants, scratching aggressively. Dick and Y/N snickered at the man, finding his actions both humorous and disgusting. This provoked jokes and playful banter between the two as a result, which lasted until it was time to say goodbye. Y/N was the last to leave again, or she thought she was as she made her way to the door and caught Rodriguez still at his desk. With no hesitation, she redirected herself over to him to ask the million-dollar question. She had a hard time convincing him that her questions were just out of curiosity, but after a few words of reassurance, he finally gave her the answer. Tyler Hackett.

pink pony club
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"god, what have you done?" "you're a pink pony girl" "and you dance at the club" "oh, mama, i'm just having fun" "on the stage in my heels" "it's where i belong, down at the pink pony club"
pairings: cowboy!dick grayson x city girl!reader
warnings/tags: none. tooth rotting fluff.
summary: "save a horse, ride a cowboy."
Tumblr media
the vibrant neon lights of gotham city flickered overhead as you stepped out of the cab and onto the cracked sidewalk. your heels clicked against the pavement, the sound foreign in this gritty city, so different from the polished streets of metropolis. you tugged at the hem of your dress, already feeling slightly out of place in the leather-jacketed crowd milling about outside the bar. a few people glanced your way, curiosity in their eyes, but you paid them no mind. after all, you were here for one reason— barbara gordon.
"relax," barbara said, looping her arm through yours as she walked you toward the entrance of the club. "you look like you're about to bolt. it's not that bad."
"i feel like i just stepped onto the set of some western horror movie," you replied with a nervous laugh. "my mom would kill me if she knew i was in a place like this."
barbara smirked, "your mom doesn't need to know. besides, it's called the pink pony club. how bad can it be?"
you glanced up at the sign flashing in a garish shade of pink. "the pink pony club? really?"
she shrugged. "it's an old gotham staple. trust me, by the end of the night, you'll be glad i brought you here. come on, you’re always so uptight. it’s time you loosened up a little. city girls can be fun, too."
you sighed but followed her inside, the door swinging shut behind you with a dull thud. the interior was dimly lit, the kind of place that seemed to thrive on shadow and secrets. music thrummed from every corner, the beat heavy and slow, and the scent of whiskey hung thick in the air. your heels sank slightly into the sticky floor, but you did your best to ignore it. you tugged at the collar of your jacket, feeling slightly claustrophobic in the dim room, surrounded by locals dressed in leather, denim, and boots.
barbara gave you a reassuring smile. "trust me, this is going to be fun."
you weren't so sure, but before you could say anything, your gaze was drawn across the room to a man standing at the bar. tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing a black cowboy hat tipped low over his face, he cut an impressive figure. his shirt was buttoned down to reveal just a hint of his toned chest, and his jeans hung low on his hips, completed with a heavy belt buckle and boots that looked worn from years of use.
he caught your stare and tilted his head up slightly, giving you a full view of his face. dark hair curled out from beneath his hat, and his blue eyes glinted with something unreadable. he looked like trouble. the kind of trouble your mother warned you about back in metropolis.
"two drinks," the bartender said, sliding a couple of glasses across the bar toward you. you blinked, confused.
"excuse me?"
"from the gentleman over there." the bartender nodded toward the man you had just been staring at. he raised his glass to you in a silent toast, and for a moment, you could’ve sworn he smiled, just the corner of his mouth quirking up in amusement.
you turned to barbara, who had been watching the whole exchange with a smirk. "who is that?"
barbara glanced over her shoulder and chuckled. "oh, him? that’s dick grayson."
"dick?" you couldn’t help but laugh. "are you serious? his name’s really dick?"
barbara’s laughter was louder this time, and she leaned in conspiratorially. "that’s what they call him. well, his name’s richard, but no one calls him that. you’ll see."
you rolled your eyes and took a hesitant sip of the drink he sent over, the alcohol warming your throat as you swallowed. barbara nudged you with her elbow, her eyes gleaming mischievously. "come on, let’s dance. i’ll show you how we do things here in gotham."
before you could protest, she grabbed your hand and pulled you onto the dance floor. the music was louder now, the bass reverberating through your chest as barbara moved easily to the rhythm, swaying her hips with a confidence that made you feel like a fish out of water. you tried to keep up, but the heels you wore weren’t exactly made for this kind of dancing.
still, you were having fun. the energy of the crowd was contagious, and as you let the music guide your movements, you caught sight of the cowboy again. he was watching you— intently, as if you were the only person in the room. the intensity of his stare sent a shiver down your spine, though you couldn't decide if it was from excitement or nerves.
barbara leaned in close to you, her breath hot against your ear. "looks like someone’s interested."
"i’m not here for that," you muttered, though your eyes still drifted to the man in the cowboy hat. there was something about him, something that made your heart race in a way you didn’t expect.
as if on cue, the man pushed off from the bar and made his way toward you. he moved with an easy confidence, his long strides parting the crowd effortlessly. he stopped in front of you and tipped his hat, his smile slow and charming. "mind if i cut in?"
you exchanged a glance with barbara, who gave you an encouraging nod. with a small shrug, you stepped back, allowing him to take your hand. his grip was firm but gentle as he pulled you closer, his other hand settling at the small of your back. up close, he was even more handsome than you’d realized, his eyes a striking shade of blue, and his smile— it was almost too perfect.
"you’re a good dancer," he said, his voice low and smooth, laced with a subtle southern accent. "you dance like you’ve been here before."
you rolled your eyes. "i think you’ve got the wrong girl. i’m just visiting. and i’m definitely not a dancer."
"oh? you could’ve fooled me," he teased, his voice thick with amusement.
you let out a short laugh, feeling a little more comfortable now. "i doubt that."
"i didn’t catch your name," he said, still leading you across the floor with surprising grace for someone dressed like a cowboy. "and i would’ve remembered a pretty face like yours."
you rolled your eyes again, though this time it was more playful than dismissive. "i’m y/n. and is your name really dick?"
his smile widened as he chuckled. "my legal name is richard, but you can call me whatever you want, darlin'."
you tried to hide your smirk but failed. "that’s very generous of you, dick."
he tipped his hat to you, his grin never faltering. "what brings a city girl like you to gotham, anyhow? ain’t often we get visitors from the big, shiny metropolis."
you glanced over at barbara, who was dancing with someone else now, laughing as if she didn’t have a care in the world. "i’m visiting my best friend. barbara gordon."
at the mention of barbara’s name, dick’s eyes lit up with recognition. "ah, babs. now that explains it," he said, glancing you up and down. his gaze lingered briefly on your heels, and he gave you a charming grin. "gotta say, though, the way you’re movin’ out here, it’s like you were born for this place. like you belong here."
you laughed softly and shook your head. "yeah, no. gotham is about as far from my world as it gets."
dick’s smile widened. "maybe. but the way you’re dancin’, it sure don’t seem that way." his hand tightened just slightly on your waist, a teasing glint in his eyes. "you ever thought about stickin' around? there's more to gotham than just this club."
"oh, really? and what exactly does gotham have that metropolis doesn’t?" you asked, playing along.
his grin turned mischievous as he leaned in just a little closer, his blue eyes locking onto yours. "me," he said, his voice low and smooth, full of confidence.
you let out a surprised laugh, rolling your eyes. "of course you’d say that."
before you could fire back with anything else, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a card. "tell you what," he said, handing it to you, "how about you come by my family’s ranch? we’ll save some horses together."
you glanced down at it. printed on it in elegant lettering was:
wayne ranch
1007 mountain rd.
and, in smaller, bolder letters at the bottom:
"save a horse, ride a cowboy."
you couldn’t help but laugh. "seriously? this is your business card?"
he winked at you. "it gets the point across. so what do you say? you come by, we’ll save some horses together." his grin was shameless, his southern drawl thick with playful charm. "i’ll introduce you to my brothers, too."
"your brothers?" you asked, raising an eyebrow. "how many of you are there?"
he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "enough to keep things interestin’. you’d have fun, trust me." the song was nearing its end, and dick gently let go of your waist, tipping his hat as he took a step back. "i hope to see you there, darlin'."
before you could respond, the music stopped, and dick flashed you one last smile before walking away, disappearing into the crowd. you were left standing on the dance floor, the card still in your hand.
barbara, having watched the entire exchange, snatched the card from you the moment dick was out of sight. she read the slogan and burst into laughter. "save a horse, ride a cowboy? i can’t believe he actually gave you this!"
you shrugged, though you couldn’t fight back your own smile. "there’s no way i can go. my mom would never let me visit some ranch with a guy i just met.
barbara gave you a look. "is your mom the fun police now?"
"she just wouldn’t understand," you replied, feeling your old reservations bubbling up again. "i mean, seriously, it’s gotham. and a ranch?"
barbara looped her arm through yours with a wicked grin. "oh, we’re definitely going. you can tell your mom you’re ‘saving horses.’ it’ll be fun, i promise."
despite your protests, you had a feeling barbara wasn’t going to take no for an answer. and, honestly? you weren’t sure you wanted to say no. not after meeting dick grayson.

Promises || Dick Grayson x Reader
A/N : I’ve been facing such a writers block omg. Anyways I hope writing this cured it.
ORIGINAL REQUEST : prompt 24 with Dick Grayson.
PROMPT 24: “Nothing can come between us ”
Letting out a tired sigh , you grabbed your phone off the coffee table to look at the time. It was almost two AM and still no sign of Dick , even though he had promised he’d be home early tonight. This was the sixth or seventh night in a row where you had stayed up in hopes to actually see your boyfriend , but to no avail. Honestly , you weren’t even sure why you were so low about his lack of presence , you knew exactly what you were getting into when you had decided to stick with Dick even after you found out about him being Nightwing. Resisting the urge to throw your phone at the wall , you quickly got off the couch you had been sitting on and made your way to your bedroom. You had work to take care off tomorrow and you needed your sleep and waiting up for Dick really wasn’t an option anymore.
Twenty minutes later you were safetly tucked into your bed, almost asleep. That is , till you heard the window being creaked open and then someone , Dick obviously , shuffling around the room. One part of you wanted to get up and hug him , tell him you were glad he came home safe while the other part of you wanted to get up and yell at him , scream at him for always being missing , for always being so vague , for never trusting you enough to actually share stuff with you. Resisting both urges , you just turned yourslef to your side , squeezed your eyes shut tighter and hoped that by some miracle , sleep would overtake you before Dick made it back to your bed.
Ofcourse , that didn’t work out for you and mere seconds later you felt the bed tip under his weight as he let out a contended sigh. “I know you’re not really asleep , you know ” he said scooting closer to you as he put an arm around your waist from behind you. “Well maybe I’m trying to ” you snapped to as you nudged his arm off and shifted away from him. You had no idea why you were acting like this. It had been days since you had actually seen Dick , let alone talk to him and even though you knew it wasn’t really his fault , but you couldn’t help yourself from being angry at him. Dick apparently sensed your anger because after a few minutes of very heavy and awkward silence he asked , “Are you mad at me ? ”
“No I’m just trying to get some sleep , if you don’t mind ” you snapped and Dick sighed in response. “ I didn’t want to ignore you , you know ” he said “I’ve been trying to get in contact with you , but I just couldn’t ”. When you didn’t say anything in response , he put a hand on your shoulder , “(Y/N ) , please can you just talk to me ?” He pleaded and you could feel your resolution fading and eventually you sighed and turned around only to be met with Dick’s baby blue eyes staring at you. “Dick , you’ve been gone for a whole week now. No call , no text, nothing. I’ve been so worried ” you mumbled. Dick brought his hand up to cup your cheek as you bit your lip in order to stop yourself from crying. “Sometimes , I feel like this whole thing , your nighttime job , it’s getting between us ” you said and Dick shook his head in response , “No (Y/N) , listen to me okay, nothing can come between us ” he said ,as he shifted his head slightly to look at you. “I know it gets tough and you get worried but I’m not ready to give up on us just yet , okay ? ” “It’s not about giving up Dick , it just that , every time you put on that suit or every time you have to leave , I can’t help but think that it’s the last time I’m seeing you ” you said quietly. “Okay that will NOT happen , I will always find a way to drag my sorry ass back to you” “You promise ? ” “I promise ”

you make you so easy
dick grayson x reader / fluff
“Stop following me.”
“Oh, did you want me to walk beside you? Hold your hand?”
You abruptly stop walking and shoot a glare up into the shadows of the nearby alley. You currently can’t see him, but you know he’s in there somewhere.
“I am trying to go home. After a long day,” you reply, “Alone.”
Nightwing melts out of the shadows, lips in a pout. “Come on, babe,” he whines, “I said sorry!”
You just shake your head and continue walking. “Stop following me, Nightwing. I wonder what the media would think, a vigilante stalking an innocent civilian and not leaving them alone?”
Some clicking and a whoosh of the air lets you  know he’s on the chase again. Gotham has never been a particularly safe place to walk alone after dark, even after the Bats rose to the occasion. The goons and villains made it hard, for sure, but the crumbling infrastructure of the city was just the icing on the cake. Buses and the train don’t run late, leaving a long walk in uncomfortable shoes after being stood up on a date.
“The media,” comes the reply, voice dripping with pride, “would simply see one of their beloved vigilantes doing their job! Nothing wrong with that.”
God, you hate he isn’t even out of breath keeping up with you. Not like you’re walking that fast, but still. You hope he trips.
“Maybe if the media knew what a dick you are, one that stands up their partner on a date they’ve been planning for months, specifically to not be interrupted!” You snap, unable to keep the simmering anger down. Fuck, if you weren’t angry about it, you’d cry. Inhaling slowly, you curl your hands into fists with determination to not make a scene. You stomp on.
It’s silent for a moment. For two. You would have thought he left if you didn’t know any better.
When Nightwing speaks, his voice is heavy. “Look, I know. I was looking forward to tonight too, but—”
You shake your head. When you breathe out, all the fight you had left. “I get it. I do. I just— let me be upset about it. Okay?”
You don’t get a reply or hear anything, but you know he’s still keeping pace. It’s nothing he can refute anyways. The both of you kept this day clear for months. It’s not often your dates can be more than a relaxed one at home, or spur of the moment. Not that you didn’t love those kinds of dates, of course you did, but it’s nice to dress up and show up for each other. You continue on your path on the crumbling side walk, only thinking about how nice it’ll be to be out of these shoes and in comfortable pajamas, maybe drink a glass of wine or two while ignoring your idiot of a partner.
As you pass through a darker portion of the street, a figure flips down in front of you. You stop abruptly lest you crash into them, but it doesn’t matter when you trip on a stray pebble and tumble right into waiting arms.
The arms curl around you tighter, rather than letting go.
“I’m sorry,” Dick murmurs into your ear. “I’m really sorry. I told them not to call me in but, fuck…”
You stand still as he digs his face into neck. A small crackle distracts you, talking too muffled for you to make anything out, though you know what this means. A hefty sigh runs through your body and you lean your head onto Dick’s shoulder briefly before prying him off.
“Duty calls,” you say softly, staring into lifeless white lenses. You look over him. He’s tense, body standing firmly on his feet in a way you know means he’s going to be stubborn. Suddenly, he clenches his jaw and looks away from you, yet he still doesn’t leave.
Lifting a hand, you softly trace his jaw up to his mask. With a small smile, you whisper “Go.”
“I’ll be as home as soon as I can,” Dick kisses the palm of your hand, and then like a tornado, flips away in a flurry off to whatever disaster is wrecking Gotham this time. You shake your head softly and start moving again.
Before you know it, you’re in bed, eyes blinking blearily as you turn on your phone. 4:43. Why’re you—?
“Did I wake you?”
Hands crawl over your waist, gently tugging you back into a chest. You can barely register the kisses on your neck before turning around to face Dick to croak out “D’ya j’s git h’me?”
You aren’t even sure your eyes are open, but you can still see Dick Grayson through the low lighting. Even while exhausted, he radiates light. He stares at you, hand brushing hair out of your eyes. “Go back to bed.”
“Hm.” is all you can manage before darkness takes over you.
The next time you wake up, a dim light shines through the blinds and you feel significantly more awake. You yawn and stretch out your body. Sitting up, something catches the edge of your eye. You look over and jump. Leaning against the doorway with coffee in hand, stands Dick Grayson. Oversized shirt, sweatpants, barefoot with eyes still half-closed, he looks beautiful.
You narrow your eyes and look to his side of the bed. Empty. You look over at the doorway. Dick. Bed. Doorway. No Dick. Dick. “You,” croaking, you point to the figure, “Who are you and what did you do with my boyfriend?”
Dick only raises and eyebrow and walks over, hand brushing messy hair of of your eyes. “Am I not allowed to get up early?”
You shake your head. “Absolutely not. You’re supposed to still be in bed until noon,”
“Well,” he smiles before pushing a thumb on your forehead, tilting your head backwards. You straighten up and give him a look. “Get up. We have somewhere to be,”
Standing up, you reach your hands above your head and stretch. “Is it important?”
You wander to the bathroom, flipping the lights on and yawning. Dick drifts over and watches you brush your teeth from the doorway as he takes another sip. “Super important. I have a full day of making up to do with my very angry partner.”
The statement makes a wave of butterflies go through you. Washing your mouth out, you look at his reflection in the mirror. “Are you being serious?”
Dick’s reflection nods. “Very serious,” he replies, bright grin overtaking his features, “Funded by Bruce, too. As an apology.”
Now that statement makes you smile. You quickly turn around, affection bubbling within you and threatening to spill over. Stepping towards Dick, you gently push the coffee out of the way and capture his lips in a long kiss. Just as it starts to get serious– invoking a different kind of butterflies– you pull away.
Dick stares at you with a dazed expression.  “I’ll be quick,” you promise.
“I mean,” he mumbles, leaning towards you presumably to finish what you started, “We don’t have to leave right away… We could take a minute—”
A peck cuts him off. Dick immediately tries to deepen the kiss, but you just pull away and push him out of the doorway so you can close the bathroom door.
“Save that for later, Grayson,” you smirk. Just before the door shuts, you lift on eyebrow. “By the time I’m out of this bathroom, you better be ready to go. I’m not wasting a single minute today.”
The door clicks shut. You hear him chuckle and call out an affirmation. Turning back to the mirror so you can finish your morning routine, you look at yourself. Bright eyes, blushed cheeks, wide grin. You weren’t lying to him, you weren’t going to waste a single minute today. That included after you get home from your outing together. Dick definitely needed a punishment after yesterday, and you intend to make him learn his lesson all night long.
Well. You better get ready.

Fragile Stability
Tumblr media
Summary: Very few things could make Dick this scared, but patching up his younger sister is one of them . (Nightwing x batsis!reader)
Word Count: 1.6K
Notes: Back with Nightwing and part of this got deleted but I cannot remember where so it mustn't be that important. (On that note: I might redo and reuse this concept for some of my other works in the future with different characters, or try again if I remember what I wanted to add). Warning for blood and mentions of needles, I don't think there's any language warnings. Enjoy! xx
━━━━━━━━━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Stay with me birdie, please stay with me." Dick grits out, feet thudding against the pavement. It had been a while since Dick had needed to outrun a villain, normally grappling away and flipping over the rooftops like he had been made for it.
Except this time, he had you in his arms, tears streaked down your face as you sob at every rough jostle. "It's okay, I'm getting you to safety, just hold on. Just a little longer, sweetheart." he panted, eyes scanning for the entrance to the nearby safehouse. If he just took a few more turns and twists he could make it, getting well out of range of Black Mask's men. When he found it, he veered heavily, slipping into the abandoned warehouse and pulling the sliding door shut.
"Nightwing, reporting in." He says tensely, activating his commlink the moment he deems it safe enough. It crackles to life, the rough voice of Batman replying.
"Copy Nightwing, report."
"Birdie's been hit." he pants out, manoeuvring to the third to last shipping container at the back. punching in the code with bloodstained fingers, he frees the lock that hisses open, pulling the doors open.
"Their status?" Batman's voice grunts, but even Dick could tell the hint of panic that sat underneath. He unloops your arms from around his neck, stepping into the hidden field surgery set up. A weak LED strip light flickers on above, casting shadows over the walls as he lays you into the surgery chair. There's very little else, a few rolling drawers of medical equipment, a fridge in the back with more supplies.
"Not good." he replies, sitting on the stool beside the chair and dragging a set of drawers closer to him. "She's-she's bleeding badly. Puncture through the thigh from the explosion, a piece of rebar." he swallows thickly, mind replaying the horrid sound of your screaming filling the air once his ears had stopped ringing. "Another in the shoulder, serrated stab wound."
His hands shake as he presses on the puncture on your upper thigh, making you scream out. He winces seeing the way your face is scrunched up, fat tears rolling down your cheeks. "I'm sorry birdie, I'm so sorry." he murmurs, heart twisting painfully.
"We're sending help to your location. Red Robin is headed there now with the car, get her stable in the meantime. We'll prep the ward immediately."
Dick's head felt light, darkness floating at the edges of his sight. He swallowed, cold sweat beading at his hairline. "We…we were ambushed by Black Mask's men. This was a set up, they were ready. They're still nearby, if they find here-"
"We'll worry about the Mask." Batman cuts him off. "You know your job, keep her stable."
"We?" Dick replies, voice closing up more and more.
"Red Hood and Myself are going to pursue Black Mask. Spoiler and Robin are going to take out the rest of the men from the hideout."
Dick swallows, blinking rapidly. "I-It was just supposed to be a minor drug bust." he manages to get out. "Just get the Mask, send more people here not out there-"
"Everyone has their orders."
The tone of Batman is cold and hard, making the words Dick wants to say die on his tongue momentarily. He hesitates before speaking again. "Why are you sending everyone?" There's a small silence, before Batman's voice crackles back over the line.
"I didn't. They left before I could say anything. Now stabilise them."
Dick's well aware of the warmth on the underside of his palm, seeping into the material of his suit. His non bloodied hand comes up to stroke your face gently, wiping away the tears coming from your puffy eyes. "It hurts Nightwing," you say, voice choked with a sob. "It burns."
His heart wrenches and he nods. "Yeah, yeah its gonna burn birdie." he says. "I'm…I'm gonna make it burn a bit more, okay?" he offers you a weak, apologetic smile, hands shaking as he goes for the first drawer, pulling out a surgical needle and sutures. "We need to close it, I need to stop the bleeding." he chokes out, tears burning at his eyes as your hand grips his wrist, hearing you whine as you try to pull his hand away from the uncomfortable pressure. He folds his hand over yours, making your hand press on the wound instead. "Hold down on this." he instructs softly. "I'm going to go get something from the fridge. Nice and tight, there we go." he murmurs, getting up from beside you to hurry for the fridge.
Pulling it open he rummages around, cursing under his breath as he doesn't find what he needs and pressing his earpiece to contact Tim to bring it. He comes back to your side, face lined and worried. "Okay, bad news, sweetheart." he says, grimacing. "I don't have anything to take the edge off. We've got no painkillers left." your eyes look up at him, glossy and scared.
"It hurts Nightwing." you cry, voice trembling. "It hurts, please don't make it hurt more."
He tries to ignore the heartbreaking gaze you send him, leaning over you to tie a bandage tightly around your stabbed shoulder. You cry out, body bucking upwards. Thankfully the stab seemed to be less urgent, the knife doing less damage than it could have with the serrated edge. He searches around a little more, a flat, wooden utensil set up by the sink.
"Bite this." He says softly, coming to your side once more and slotting it in between your teeth. He hates the way that your eyes look up at him all glassy, brimming with unshed tears. You shake your head, making him bring his hands up to cradle your face. "Hey, hey sweetheart, shhhh. shhh..." he tries to soothe, your chest beginning to tremor with muffled sobs. He plasters a fake smile onto his face, hoping that you can't see his teeth clenched tight.
He sits on the stool next to you, moving your hand over the thigh wound so he can look at it. His hands feel numb seeing how much blood you've lost, and he has to snap himself back into it. He peels off his gloves, shake in his fingers now prominent as he grabs tweezers and the sutures.
Stabilise you. That's all he has to do. Till he can get you back to the infirmary.
Despite the steady breaths he takes to calm himself, they're ripped from his throat the second the needle pierces your skin. The wooden spatula falls from your mouth as your mouth splits impossibly wide, eyes scrunched up as you scream. He has to lean over you, forearms keeping you pressed to the chair while he desperately pleads for you to stay still. He can see how much it burns, the way you hiccup after every breathless sob. He hates it, hating how after each pull of the suture through your skin your face ripples with pain. Each stitch he makes stabs at his heart.
It was supposed to be simple.
He grits his teeth, trying to not let himself cry. This was supposed to be an easy mission, it was your first after all. Sure, Bruce was hesitant to let his daughter run around in a costume fighting bad guys. He had wanted you, his unspoken favourite, to live a peaceful life. However, when you expressed interest in the night life, Dick had vouched for you. He offered to be the one to take you out on your first mission, spent countless hours with Bruce in the cave training you. You were meant to come home with scrapes on your knees and a rip in your suit. Not here in a dingy downtown shipping container having a needle shoved through your skin repeatedly.
This was his fault.
Your screams ring so loud in his head that he forgets what the sound of your laugh is like, the irritated huffs you make when you and Tim discuss entrance exams. "D-Dickie..." you sob weakly, hand pushing lightly against his. "Di-Dickie. St-stop…please. Puh-please stop…" you sob, a wispy sound as your eyes scrunch up again. He doesn’t care that you called him by his real name. After all, it was Dick Grayson that had failed you as an older brother. Not Nightwing.
His vision tunnels as he continues to stitch despite your whimpers and sobs, hands shaking so badly it takes him twice as long as he expects to even get halfway. Right now, you weren't just the next Batgirl. You weren't just another spandex clad orphan standing next to Bruce. Right now you were his little sister, the same one he'd spend movie nights with and let hide in his room to cool off when you were mad at Bruce.
When he finally finishes and ties it off, the tools clatter from his hands. He leans forward on to his knees, breath struggling to make it into his lungs. He felt lightheaded, everything feeling like it was burning. His hand managed to feel for your limp one, thumb sliding over your wrist to feel your slow pulse. His other hand pinched the domino mask from his face, letting it clatter to the floor as he wiped his eyes. he didn't even pay attention to the calling of Red Robin through the com, letting him know that he was pulling up right outside. He let himself take a few shaky sobs, fingers digging the tears from his eyes and splattering onto the discarded mask under him.
He wasn’t Nightwing right now.
He was Dick Grayson, the older brother who put you on death's door.

Your writing is so damn good, you execute every request perfectly 😭
Could you maybe write something where Dick's insecure partner wants to break up with him because their self-image is getting worse cause they feel they can't catch up to the Golden Boy reputation, superheroes, billionaires and so on?
hi, thanks for the request! I hope I did it justice :) a brief interlude from jaytodd before we return to our regularly scheduled program lol
dick grayson x gn!reader. low self esteem, an almost breakup, reader feeling insecure, threatened, sad. happy ending! 2.1k words
****
You've been tugging at your outfit for ten minutes. At this rate, you'll have to concede that this is as good as it's going to get.
"My love, you almost ready?"
You sigh and watch your reflection fold its arms.
"Yeah," you say softly. "'M ready."
The door opens. Your heart swoops.
Dick is beautiful, as usual. Your boyfriend can do a lot, including fill a suit. Both your and his outfits were tailor-made because that's one of the perks of being the son of a billionaire.
Over and over, you'd insisted you could wear off-the-rack, and over and over, Dick had said that was silly, that Bruce wouldn't mind.
And it's true that what you're wearing flatters you better than anything from Macy's or Marshall's would've. But you know it won't help tonight. Not in a room full of Gotham's elite.
"Just as I suspected," Dick says, immediately draping his arms over your hips. "You're gonna steal the show tonight."
He's lying.
That voice in your head has gotten louder recently, and you don't know how to turn it off.
You kiss him instead of responding. Dick enthusiastically reciprocates, always delighted when you touch him. You used to think it would be enough.
But ever since you found out that not only are you dating a billionaire philanthropist with a face that makes angels weep, but that said guy is also arguably the most beloved hero in Gotham, maybe second only to the Batman (who's his freaking dad?!), you've begun to have doubts.
You pull back. Dick's tie perfectly sets off his eyes. They're bright as they look at you.
"Everything okay?" he asks, brushing your cheek with his thumb.
"Uh-huh," you say, trying to smile. "Just nervous."
“Hey, it's alright. I'll be by your side all night. I'll save you from any and all small talk, promise." He winks. "And we can duck out early, get hot chocolate from that place you like. They won't care."
Dick's always doing that. Always catering to you. You're just some nobody who happened to stumble into the best relationship you’ve ever had with a golden god.
Dick never reminds you of that. That he could do better. He doesn't have to—you know it all on your own.
You swallow. “Okay. If you're sure. I... I would like to leave early, Gray."
“‘Course, baby,” Dick says, attaching his cuff links. "Anything you want."
You turn back to the mirror, wondering if you can reinvent your personality before you go and remind everyone what a mistake Dick Grayson has made in choosing you.
****
The party is tasteful, though a little stuffy. You're only here because Dick is going to give a speech, and he asked you to come support him. And while you know it's better for him to go without you so you won't dull his shine, it seems Dick hasn't quite figured that out.
You hold onto Dick’s arm as he makes his usual rounds. Dick doesn't enjoy these events, you know that, but he's fluid in his interactions. There is no doubt he’s Bruce Wayne’s prodigy. With his suit, his hair, his easy posture, Dick is almost unrecognizable from when you woke up with him this morning.
He's in his element. All you can do is peer in and watch.
Dick leans in and slips a hand around your waist after the fourth interaction with a donor. A donor who, again, acted like Dick may as well have been dragging around a coat rack with how intently they ignored you. Not that you give a shit about what the one percent have to say about you, except sometimes they say a lot of mean things, things you're pretty sure they don't let Dick overhear, and sometimes you start wondering if Dick is the only person who can't see truth in what they say, and sometimes—
“Hey.” Dick leans in to talk in your ear. He's warm and solid. You wish that was a comfort. “You okay?”
You're exhausted.
“Uh-hmm.”
He is going to wake up one of these days and realize he can have it so much better.
Dick moves like he's about to say more, pull you closer and permeate your senses with his gold.
“Dickie!”
Sweet, tinkling laughter echoes across the room. The crowd parts for this new woman, an obvious socialite, dressed to the nines and gorgeous.
Her dress matches Dick's tie. You feel sick.
When she reaches you two, she wastes no time grabbing Dick and kissing his cheek. He extricates himself from her, like he's done a million times before with everyone else who thinks they're entitled to a piece of Dick Grayson. He shoots you an apologetic look. You look away.
“My God, it’s been what, ten years?” she says. Then she sees you. “Oh! Where are my manners? I’m Caroline Banesbury, Duchess of Middlesworth. I heard the Dickie Grayson was going to be here, and I had to come.”
“Been a while,” Dick says, smiling blandly. “How are you, Caroline?”
“Spectacular! Father just bought another castle. You should come and see it sometime.” She plucks a flute of champagne off of a passing tray and smiles behind the rim of the glass.
“Dick and I go way back,” she says, gaze roving over him. “I hear you're transforming Blüdhaven. Taking a page out of Bruce's book, hm? You always had a big heart, Dickie.”
She grabs his arm and links it with hers. You sigh and take a sip of your own drink. You half-wish Poison Ivy would come in and gas the room or something.
Dick clears his throat and maneuvers out of her grip once more, letting go of her with a light pat. He returns to you, snugly holding your shoulders.
"This is my partner," he says about you.
Caroline hums, looking over you. "I see. Pleasure."
You nod. She turns back to Dick.
“If I can be of any help to your project, you let me know,” she adds, glancing down at where her empty arm now hangs at her side. “Anything.”
“That's generous of you, Carrie.”
Dick and I go way back.
Oh. Right. You're stupid. They've dated.
“We should have dinner,” she continues. “Catch up. I'm dying to know what Gotham's darling has been up to.”
“I feel sick,” you announce.
Dick and Caroline turn to you. Caroline looks perplexed, like you've just said you like to chew concrete.
“Oh, I'm sorry to hear that,” she says, hardly sparing you a glance. "Perhaps you ought to lie down."
You feel Dick's eyes on you. If you don't leave soon, he'll know you're lying. Possibly the worst part about dating Batman's protégé.
Suddenly, leaving this hall is the most important thing you've ever had to do. You feel like you'll die if you don't.
Your feet start moving.
"Baby—"
Anyway, this is Caroline's chance. She can swoop in with her trust fund and while you think Dick can do way better than her—he can always do better—anyone is better than you. For Dick Grayson, who has been a master acrobat since he was a child, son of Batman, leader of the Titans, indubitably intelligent, capable, beautiful, the best goddamn guy you'll ever know—
You've lost your way. You're out of the gala, away from duchesses and doom. And you meant to get your coat but this hall that Bruce rented is enormous. You've no idea where you are. But you're alone.
Bruce must've known too, how unfit you are for his son. And why wouldn't he tell Dick? Unless Dick ignored him, because Dick, for all his smarts, is stupidly in love with you, thinks you're where he should put his heart, is certain you won't fumble and drop it.
Warm, callused fingers catch your wrist and you remember, suddenly, Dick telling you once, after you'd nearly stumbled into the street, that he'd never let you fall.
You meet his eyes. Why does he look at you like that? Who gave him the right to look at you like-like you—as if you could ever deserve—
"Hey," he says, squeezes your hand. "Hey, hey. What's going on?"
Dick Grayson is not a trusting man but he trusts you and good God, you're about to break him.
"I need to break up with you," you blurt.
"What?" he breathes. "What—why would you say that?"
You wish he'd give you the slip he gave everyone in that room, gently separate your arm from his hand. You never learned how to evade Dick's touch.
"Because it's true. Dick, please understand—"
"No, I'm trying to understand. Because yesterday—no, tonight, you were fine—"
"No, Dick, I wasn't fine! I haven't been fine in months!"
You wrench your arm away. He looks like you slapped him.
"You know anybody I talk to in there means nothing, right? You know that, honey." He's pleading.
You curl your fist into your eye. "It's more than that, Gray."
"Then tell me what the problem is," he says desperately. "Tell me and we'll fix it. I promise we can fix it."
"You can't!" you say, voice cracking. "You can't fix me."
Dick shakes his head. "I don't—"
"Why can't you let me break up with you with a little bit of dignity?" you ask. "Do you have to be better at this too?"
"I don't want to break up," he says, tugging at a handful of his hair. "This doesn't make sense. We're happy. You're happy, aren't you? Don't I make you happy?"
"Of course," you choke out. "Of course you make me happy. But you don't see I'm bad for you. You're wonderful and perfect and golden, Dick. And I'm a stain. I need to be scrubbed away."
"Wh—that's not true!"
"Everywhere we go, people see me with you and are immediately confused. I'm not a superhero, I'm not royalty, I'm not a socialite, and yet somehow I've managed to snag Gotham's darling. This is a mistake. I'm trying to do you a favor and wake you up!"
Dick's face is hard with anger. How could you have thought this would be easy?
"I don't need to be woken up! What is it that makes you think I have no agency over the people I choose to spend time with? Everyone I meet thinks they're entitled to touch me, demand me. Everyone but you. You, the person I chose to love, who I love everyday. Do you think you pulled the wool over my eyes and you're snapping me out of it? Is that what you really think?"
And isn't this the most puzzling thing? That he's not sad or gently accepting; Dick is mad.
"I just—" He runs a hand through his hair. "I don't mean to yell, but really, I can't bear it if you see me as some god on a pedestal, unattainable and inhuman, like everyone else sees me. I love you on purpose."
"You're so accomplished, though," you say weakly. "You're..." You wave your hand over him. "You're fucking Nightwing, D. You were Robin, you have superheroes for friends, Batman for a parent, you're beloved by, like, all of Jersey—"
"My love, you know those are just parts of me. You see all of me. You know me. And that's not a one-way privilege, okay? I'm so damn lucky to know you, to love you, to be with you, to fight with you. To fight for you. Knowing you isn't something I take for granted."
"But I'm boring," you say, tears spilling over. "Jesus Christ, Dick, I'm plain and untalented, barely a dime to my name, so painfully ordinary that—"
"Listen to me," he says, taking your face in his hands. "Flying around or shooting lasers out of your eyes, sure, it's cool, and it's helpful for taking down an alien dictator. But I don't need you to do any of that, honey. I don't need nor want you to be anyone but you. I wasn't tricked or swindled into loving you. We caught each other halfway, just like we were meant to."
You let him pull you into his arms, let him press your tear stains to his silk pocket square, let his hair fall around you.
His embrace is solid, firm, but when he inhales, his shoulders shake.
"Do you—" He swallows, throat against yours. "Do you still want to break up?"
His heart beats against your cheek.
"I'm just afraid you'll get tired of me," you whisper. "Bored. Annoyed."
"I won't," he whispers. "You're the least boring person ever. It's never boring to be loved."
You squeeze your eyes shut. Dick's warmth encloses you.
"No, I don't want to break up. I'm sorry."
He holds you tighter, and you realize you never had to match Dick's tie. Not when you've got his heart.

It's the second time since last week that you're coming home exhausted and slightly disheveled from some hangout. He knows you've been hanging out with his older brother, and he trusts you both a lot, but this is getting strange. Muscle ache and soreness by your thighs and arms? Just what did you both do to be this worn out? Jason actually doesn't want to think about it, but he is pretty concerned that something is happening behind his back.
It doesn't make it better that you just pretend nothing is happening and seem to be yourself as usual. Is he really that better than him? No, you would never cheat on him. You promised to never leave him and all that after all. But he also can't ask you directly and accuse you of something like cheating. Jason's already dreading the truth and the way you'll look at him once he mentions it.
Laying in bed beside you, he massages your thighs gently with his warm hands, apparently sore after hanging out with Dick. Just what is this dickhead doing with you? The second time in a row as well. A sick feeling spreads in his gut as he thinks more about it, eventually nuzzling his head into the crook of your neck to calm down while continuing his soothing motions across your thighs.
The evening ends up with you both falling asleep as usual, however Jason has made up a rough plan. He needs to find out the truth. He could technically just ask you directly and stop overthinking, see if his suspicions are true or not. But no, he doesn't want to come off as desperate or stupid in front of you. It took him a lot of time to open up and be vulnerable with you in the first place, then having introduced you to his family once he was forced to. About a year after you started dating, you met his family in a rather chaotic dinner. But you didn't seem to mind, actually seemed to enjoy his big family and could make easy friends with all of them. Hell, even Damian doesn't seem to mind you.
Once you told Jason you'll be heading out with Dick again, he made sure you didn't notice him following you getting to the manor. He was surprised as you walked in with your own key, not having realised you had a key to the manor in the first place. Shrugging it off, he follows inside, well... rather breaks in, so you won't notice him being right behind you.
He stays in the hallway and watches you walk further into the house, cocking his head to the side once you go into the elevator that's usually used to get to the Batcave. Whatever this is, he is having even more thoughts and doubts, getting an even worse feeling about it all. Have you been hiding a secret identitiy from him and are teaming up with Dick? Why didn't you tell him when you know about his own vigilante-family-circus. He needs to know more. He needs to find out.
He follows right after once the elevator doors open again, getting spooked by Alfred.
»Master Jason. What's the occasion?«
The butler looks as neutral as always, but he can see the hint of a smile in his expression. Are they all teaming up against him? »Oh, Alfred... nothing, just, uh... just a small visit. Yeah... I'll be right back.«
Jason quickly steps into the elevator and presses the button to the Batcave, feeling a bit victorious that he could escape this poor distraction attempt. Now it's time to finally find out what this is all about. His fists clench and unclench, trying to keep his cool and not throw up from all this overthinking and possible situations.
The doors open and he basically storms out as quick as a bullet, halting once he hears heavy panting and small praises. He could never mistake your voice for someone else's and his heart sinks into the floor as he listens more to it. This is bad. Really, really bad.
Jason follows from where the sounds come from, being a little confused on why you're both in the Batcave. Sure, it's probably thrilling to possibly get caught, but... seriously, the Batcave? He didn't know you were into that kind of stuff.
He finally figures out where all the panting is coming from, arriving at the training area. He peeks from the corner, feeling his heart almost explode in his chest. But what he sees is entirely different from what he thought.
Dick is standing in front of you with his hands extended for you, both of your knuckles being bandaged up. You are throwing punches at his hands, focusing on your form and stance, while he gives you some feedback and occasional praises. It seems that you are both concentrated and focused, not noticing him at all and just continuing with... what even are you doing? It doesn't really look like a sparring session. But it also doesn't look like anything he imagined you two would be doing.
Eventually, he steps up and clears his throat loud enough to get both of your attention and stop for now. You light up once you see him, smiling and immediately start talking.
»Jason! Look, we've been training together, I asked him if he could teach me self-defense and he's been teaching me since last week. I'm pretty good at it, I can throw punches, kicks and get out of several pins or locks. He said I'm a natural.«
You decide to ignore his scowl and deathly glare towards Dick as you explain and walk up to him. Jason glances to you and can't help but soften up as he sees your smile, also stepping up to you and wrapping his arm possessively around you.
»You couldn't have asked me?« He questions and keeps his sharp eyes on Dick, who winces lightly at the sight of his brother tearing him apart with his gaze. He takes the sign however and takes a few steps away, leaving you some privacy.
»You are so busy with other stuff, I didn't want to bother you any more than necessary. I was planning on asking you, but Dick is also a great teacher.« You answer him as you lean into his side, stretching your arms, looking up at him.
»Oh, I'm sure.« He grits out and finally tears his eyes away from his brother, looking back to you with a softer expression. Seems like he was indeed overthinking and thinking lowly of you. There's no way you would cheat on some prick like Dick. You notice he still seems to be more on edge, tilting your head at him.
»What did you think we were doing?« You narrow your eyes at him, making him gulp down and start to feel even more stupid.
»Nothing!« Jason manages to answer you quickly, earning a scoff and slap against his chest in return.

Prince Dick was known for his scandalous activities. But those "rumors" were almost always shut down by his majesty, King Bruce.
I mean, Prince Dick was the first in line to the throne, so he had to uphold his reputation. But that didn't stop him from flirting and fucking with every maid in the palace.
You, one of the trusted knights in Gotham, were assigned to guard and shield Prince Dick. But sometimes, it felt as if you didn't really do anything.
Dick was... Dick. Currently, he's fooling around with one of the maids of the palace. You could hear her moaning. The sounds of skin slapping and Dick's voice, telling her how much of a "good girl" she was.
Honestly, it was repulsive. This was the future king of Gotham.
A few minutes later, the door creaked open, and the maid ran out. Her cheeks were puffy and red. Dick leaned against the doorframe; his bedsheets were wrapped around his hips, but that didn't cover his boner.
"What'd I do?" Dick asked, tilting his head, causing you to snicker. "Well, your Royal Highness, maybe you should be less... Dickish."
"Come on, love, you love Dickish." You rolled your eyes. "Don't call me that, Dick."
He snickered. "Original. Hey, you know what?"
"What?"
"I have a perfectly empty bed, you know." You rolled your eyes. Prince Dick was always trying to get into your pants, either with his flirtatious comments or his wandering looks.
"Dick, stop," you muttered. "Why?" he said, looking up at you with the saddest expression. "Goodnight, your royal highness." Dick nodded, taking the hint. He retreated back into his room.
Tumblr media
The sun rose, waking up the entire kingdom, including his royal highness, Prince Dick. You stood guard the entire night; it was part of the job, right?
The door creaked open, revealing Dick. There were bags under his eyes, and his cheeks were red and puffy. Your cold demeanor melted before it froze back over. "Are you alright, your royal highness?" you asked.
"What? Yeah, of course," he replied with a smile before quickly walking away.
Strange. Could it have been about last night? But you didn't care, right? You were his knight. And he was going to be king. And you sort of loathed him.
He was bratty, annoying, stupid, and a heartbreaker. You did not need that.
Tumblr media
You watched as Prince Dick flirted with the neighboring princess, Princess Barbara. You were five feet behind Prince Dick, occasionally listening to his conversation with the princess whenever she laughed a little too loud.
Prince Dick led her to the fountain and gave her a kiss on the cheek; it wasn't incriminating, of course. But it was living up to his reputation of being an A-grade asshole and a flirt.
You looked away as the two continued flirting. You were not jealous, right? I mean, you were just a knight. You had no business being jealous.
Tumblr media
You watched over Prince Dick every day. He was your responsibility. You had to follow him everywhere. You watched him flirt with countless men and women. You'd watched his breakdowns and his moments of triumph.
You had seen it all. But you felt empty every time. You were supposed to feel only one thing about him, and that was the need to protect him. That was it. But how have you changed over the past few years? He was becoming king soon. After that, he could get rid of you as he pleased.
You were a few feet behind him, watching as he entered his room before you took your place. You stood outside his door, guarding and protecting him from any possible harm.
Your eyes fell down to the doorknob. You wanted and needed to do so. An exchange of words wouldn't hurt, right?
Your hand fell to the doorknob, gripping it tightly. Your brain needed it to be locked, but your heart longed for it to be open.
Your cold demeanor melted as you twisted the doorknob, opening the door slowly. "What?" Dick called out, hearing the door creak open. "Hey," he said, turning around at the sound of your voice. "Oh, hey. Do you need something? I... did something happen?" he asked.
You smiled and shut the door, venturing further into his room. He tilted his head. "What's wrong?" he asked. You wrapped your arms around his neck, "This."
You leaned in and gave him a gentle kiss. Surprisingly, he kissed back. You quickly pulled away as you felt his hands slide down to your waist. "You and me... we can't happen, okay?"
"Why?" he asked obliviously. "I'm not a princess. I have no real title. And the kingdom would not approve, okay?" You replied, tears brimming your eyes.
"No, we can make this work, okay?" Dick tried reassuring you, but how? You were just a knight. It would never work.
"I do not wanna be your sidechick, Dick!" You yelled, tears falling down your eyes. "You're breaking my heart, love." His hand cupped your cheek.
You slapped it away. "We—we would be unhappy together! We would fight all the time and we would loathe each other, okay? Why can't you understand that?" Tears fell down your cheeks.
"Please, we can make this work, I promise," he whispered.
"No, Dick, we can't. We are too different." You gave him a soft kiss on his cheek and left.
You had nothing with Prince Dick Grayson. You were simply his protector.

Walking down the long candy aisle, you tossed bag after bag into your shopping cart. Tomorrow night was Halloween, and you needed to be well-prepared for the horde of trick-or-treaters that were going to stop by the Wayne Manor to try and snag some treats and full-sized candy bars. Everyone knew that Bruce Wayne and his wife were mighty generous, the latter more so - especially when it came to Halloween.
It was your favorite holiday after all.
But, you weren’t alone. Damian followed right beside you, quiet as always. He stayed close, never straying too far from the cart - despite you telling him that he could wander around the aisle if he was getting bored.
Honestly, you didn’t know why he insisted on coming with you, knowing full well that you were getting Halloween candy. You hoped that he was just curious about the holiday, or he wanted to spend more time with you, but you didn’t really know when it came to Damian.
Really, it looked like he was bored; there was a small frown on his face and everything. But, normally there was always a frown on his face… So…
Stuffing his hands in the front pockets of his pants, he turned to look up at you as you continued to smile, humming along to the Halloween song that was playing from the store’s speakers; throwing bag after bag into your cart. Which was growing pretty full at this point, and kind of heavy to push but you powered through.
“What is the point of this holiday?” Damian suddenly spoke up, eyeing you as you paused, grabbing a giant bag of assorted Jolly Ranchers.
“Well,” You began, smiling down at your youngest son, “Do you want the original lore or what the holiday means nowadays?” You asked, and Damian pursed his lips.
“Both.”
Nodding, you continued on with your candy shopping, “Alright, well,” You worried on your bottom lip momentarily, “A long time ago, people believed that spirits could come back to the world on Halloween. So, they’d light big fires and dress up in costumes to scare them away.” You glanced down at him, seeing that his eyebrows were furrowed, “Over time, it just turned into this fun holiday where we dress up and go door-to-door for candy. Nothing really spooky about it now - just good fun.” You shrugged, unable to stop the big smile from forming on your face, “It can be spooky though if you watch scary movies, or go to some haunted house attraction or something. But those kind of end up being more fun than actually terrifying most of the time too.”
Damian turned his nose up, “Ummi, I don’t understand how any of that would be considered fun.” He huffed, rolling his eyes, “It’s childish.”
Pausing your cart, you looked back down at him with a small smile. You knew Damian never really had the chance to be a kid, to act like a kid, to go and experience all the fun things that kids usually experienced. He was born and raised to be an assassin. He never got to play, never got to imagine, or learn how to be a kid.
When you came into Bruce’s life, and in turn, the kids’ lives two years ago, Damian was still such a young boy. He had no idea what being a kid was like. He didn’t know - but was beginning to understand - that the world offered more than just going out killing someone or beating someone up.
“Well, it is a holiday where mostly children participate,” You reasoned, trying your best to hide your amusement as the look of disgust spread across his face at the thought, “I understand that you had not grown up with it, and I understand that it does seem very childish…” You trailed off before continuing, “But, I think… If you are willing this year… That you should at least give it a try.” You shrugged once more, making Damian look up at you with a small glare. “And if you don’t like it, then you don’t have to do it next year. If you do not wish.”
Damian’s brow furrowed further, his lips curling in disdain. “Why should I care for such ridiculous traditions?” He snapped, crossing his arms over his chest. “Parading around in costumes for candy? It’s beneath me.”
You bit back a smile at his reaction, the typical arrogance still so present despite how much he had grown since you first came into his life. “I know you think it’s pointless,” You said calmly, “But it’s not just about costumes and candy. It’s about taking a moment to step away from the seriousness of the world. It’s about fun.”
“Fun,” Damian repeated, his tone laced with sarcasm.
“Yes, fun,” You nodded. “And you’re still a kid, Damian. You deserve to have a little bit of that, too.” Seeing that he was staying silent, you continued, “If you will allow it, can I show you what Halloween is really all about?” You offered, keeping your voice calm, yet hopeful.
Damian held your gaze for a long moment, clearly considering the idea - you had half a mind to think that he was always curious about the holiday, especially since most of the family loved the holiday. Finally, he let out a sigh, followed by a small, reluctant nod, “Fine. But if this turns out to be as pointless as I think, you owe me.”
You smiled, nodding, knowing this was a big step for him - a step out of his comfort zone - “Deal. I think you’ll be surprised.” You placed the last candy bag into your cart, “Do you want to go to Spirit Halloween? We can find you a costume, and one for me, too. You can help me pick, if you like.” You began walking towards the checking counter, “Your father has decided to not participate in Halloween this year, which sucks because I already bought our costumes, but hey,” You shrugged, glancing down at Damian with a mischievous grin, “That just means that there is more candy for you, me, and your brothers.”
Damian’s mind whirred with determination upon hearing your words. This holiday was obviously very special to you, and you seemed disappointed that Bruce had decided to forgo Halloween this year. He pursed his lips, a plan slowly forming in his mind.
~~~
Later that evening, Damian found himself standing outside of Bruce’s study, staring at the closed door. Raising his hand, he knocked briskly, “Father.”
“Come in,” Bruce replied, and Damian stepped inside. Bruce looked up from his desk, hunched over a stack of papers, “What is it, Damian?”
“Why are you not dressing up for Halloween with Ummi?” He cut straight to the point - like with most things.
Bruce sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “I have a lot of paperwork to finish for Wayne Enterprises. It’s not that I don’t want to-”
“You always say that family comes first,” Damian interrupted, his eyes narrowing, “Isn’t this family time?”
Looking down at the paperwork on his desk, he hummed, Bruce paused, a flicker of amusement danced in his eyes. “Well, I guess I could finish this later.”
“You can,” Damian spoke curtly, “Good night, father.” He then left the study without another word, shutting the door behind him.
Bruce smiled to himself, staring at the door, “Good night, Damian.”
~~~
“Jayjay! I haven’t seen you in forever! You really need to come and visit me more often.” You exclaimed, hugging Jason tightly as he chuckled, hugging you back.
Resting his head against your head, he let out a sigh, “I saw you last week, ma,” He spoke, already dressed in his costume, “I’m glad to see you though.” He admitted, stepping back to look around the main entrance, “Where is everyone?”
You waved your hand randomly in the air, “Somewhere. D arrived before you, and Tim before him since his college is nearby. And Dami might be in his room, probably changing into his costume.”
At that, Jason raised an eyebrow, “Damian is coming with us?” He asked, shocked, “Did you bribe him or something?”
“I convinced him,” You emphasized, grinning as Jason just rolled his eyes, his grin matching yours.
“Of course you did.” He murmured, shaking his head, “This is going to be a disaster.”
You huffed, giving him a short look but before you or Jason could say anything more, Dick rushed out from the hallway that led towards the kitchen; wearing his ‘The Flash’ costume. Something that he and Wally had come up with to do together for some party after trick-or-treating; Wally was going as Nightwing, and Dick was going as The Flash. You thought it was quite funny.
“Mom, Tim needs help or something.”
You raised an eyebrow, “He needs help?”
Dick nodded, “Yeah, he may or may not have tried to bake last-minute cookies. He made chocolate chip ones, and then somehow managed to burn them to the point that we could probably use them as hockey pucks in the winter.”
“Why didn’t you stop him?” Jason asked his brother, only for Dick to cross his arms.
“I was busy doing something else.” Jason’s face scrunched up into a look of disbelief at his words, but you just rolled your eyes.
Hearing a loud crash from the kitchen, you turned back to your two oldest boys. “I’ll be right back. And please be nice to each other, you two. Send your father this way if you see him!” You called out to them as you speeded towards the kitchen.
~~~
True to their word, about thirty minutes later, Bruce was sent to the kitchen, where he found you helping Tim with his burnt cookie disaster. Turning around, you froze, eyes wide for a split second before placing the burnt cookies on the counter and brushing off your cookie crumb hands. You were in shock, seeing Bruce all dressed up in his striking Hades costume that you had bought him two months prior.
He wore a long, flowing black velvet robe that cascaded down to his feet, with subtle purple accents. And, underneath, he had on a fitted black tunic that highlighted his strong build, paired with dark fitted pants. A belt with intricate silver detailing cinched his waist, featuring motifs of skulls.
On his head was a silver crown shaped like twisted branches, giving him a royal yet ominous presence. He even wore the blank strapped sandals you bought him.
“Bruce…” You trailed off, your mouth agape as he left you speechless.
Bruce stood there a bit awkwardly for a moment before clearing his throat, “I believe you wanted to see me?” He asked, reminding you that you had been wanting to speak to him.
“Oh, yeah,” You swallowed thickly, “I… I was going to try and convince you to dress up… But it seems that you’ve already changed your mind.” You muttered, a bright smile growing on your face as you simply admired your husband at this point.
He adjusted the neckline of his costume, “Yeah, you should ask Damian about that.” He confessed, and your smile softened, your heart warming at his words. “I feel very awkward.”
“Dami convinced you?” You asked, and Bruce just gave you a small, knowing smile. You let out a sigh before freezing once more. Looking down at your Halloween-themed hoodie and sweats, you cringed. “Oh! I have to get dressed!” You stumbled over your own two feet, pressing a kiss to Tim’s temple, who had been trying to hide his snickers from the whole situation happening before him. Pausing beside Bruce, you leaned up to press a kiss to his cheek, “You look oh-so very handsome, my love.” You assured him lovingly, but quickly, and before he knew it, you had sped out of the kitchen, leaving him with a snickering, and very amused, Tim. But, your sweet words did help him somewhat.
“Did Damian really convince you?” He asked, and his father nodded as he crossed his arms. Shaking his head, Tim smirked, “You’re getting soft, old man.”
~~~
“I swear, if Damian takes any longer, we’re going to miss the entire trick-or-treating window,” Jason grumbled, dressed in his V costume from ‘V for Vendetta.’ He leaned against the banister of the main stairs, arms crossed, the mask's strap looped over his arm. “What’s he doing up there anyway? Practicing his scowls?”
Dick chuckled, “Maybe he’s trying to find the right shade of brooding to match his costume.”
“And what about you?” Jason shot back, rolling his eyes, “You’re going to run out of breath from all the speedster puns.”
Tim, dressed as The Doctor from ‘Doctor Who,’ glanced over his sonic screwdriver with a teasing smirk, “At least I’m not stuck wearing spandex.”
Bruce, in his Hades costume, tried to maintain some semblance of authority as he interjected, “Can we focus, please? I’d like to enjoy this night without all of you bickering.”
“Awe, c’mon, B! What’s a little banter among brothers?” Dick grinned, nudging Bruce playfully. “Besides, you’ve got a whole ‘dark lord of the underworld’ vibe going on. It suits you.”
Just then, at the sound of footsteps, all four of them turned their heads towards the top of the stairs; the banter ceased, and the air filled with a mixture of awe and shock. You descended down the stairs, your Persephone costume shimmering under the lights of the mansion.
You wore a flowing, floor-length dress in soft shades of lavender and pastel pink. The fabric draped elegantly over your figure, with delicate layers that swayed gently as you moved. A fitted bodice showcased your silhouette, adorned with intricate floral embroidery that spiraled around the neckline, resembling blossoming vines.
Your hair perfectly framed your face, and on the top of your head, was a crown of flowers - daisies, roses, and lilacs. The crown sat perfectly upon your head, exuding an ethereal charm. Your eyes sparkled with mischief and bright joy, making you look just like the Goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underworld. The sight left Bruce momentarily speechless as he admired the absolute beauty before him.
“Wow, mom,” Tim’s eyes were wide with surprise, “You look like you walked straight out of a myth.”
Jason huffed with faux annoyance, “Great, ma won Halloween again.”
Dick sighed, clapping Jason and Tim’s shoulders, “Yep, better luck next time.”
Your heart soared at their reactions, a wave of pure happiness washing over you. “Thank you, my boys.”
Bruce, however, remained quiet, his expression softening as he took you in. The corners of his lips twitching upward ever so slightly. “You look beautiful,” He finally said, his voice low and sincere. The pride in his eyes was unmistakable.
You let out a sigh, your own expression softening a bit, “Thank you, Bruce.” You walked over, adjusting his collar a bit, “And thank you for dressing up. It means the world to me.” You added, before leaning up to press your lips against his in a gentle kiss. As you pulled away, the sound of exaggerated groans filled the air.
Jason immediately made a face, scrunching up his nose in mock disgust. “Ew, not in front of me!” He exclaimed, dramatically turning his head away.
Dick laughed, shaking his head as he fanned his face dramatically. “I think I just lost my appetite for candy!”
Tim pretended to gag, leaning against the banister for support. “Can we please keep the PDA to a minimum? I still have to look at you two tonight.”
Bruce merely raised an eyebrow, a small, amused smirk tugging at his lips as he watched the chaos unfold. “You all are the ones making it a spectacle,” He replied, trying to maintain his composure.
You couldn’t help but laugh at the brothers' antics. “Alright, alright! Enough, or we’ll never get out the door,” You chuckled out, your cheeks slightly flushed. “Now, where is my Dami?”
Before anyone could answer, you heard a loud huff from the stairs. Looking up, you gasped silently, clasping your hands together at your chest.
Damian stood at the top of the staircase, dressed in a classic Dracula costume. A long, black cape draped over his shoulders, its interior lined with deep crimson fabric. The cape was fastened at his throat with a striking brooch.
His attire beneath the cape featured a crisp white dress shirt, its collar dramatically high. A fitted, white vest, and tailored trousers completed the look, giving him an air of aristocracy that was unmistakably vampire. His dark hair was slicked back, highlighting his piercing green eyes.
Jason, leaning against the wall, couldn’t help but chuckle. “Look at you, Dracula! All dressed up and ready to suck the fun out of Halloween.” He teased, a mischievous grin plastered on his face.
Dick then chimed in, “I wish I had my camera. I didn’t know we were getting a special guest from Transylvania tonight!”
Tim, always the quick wit, added, “Just don’t let him get too close - he might actually try sucking our blood or something.”
Damian narrowed his eyes at Jason, Dick, and Tim, his expression darkening slightly, “Your pathetic attempts at humor are more laughable than your costumes. If you continue, I might just find a way to steal all of your candy that you get tonight.”
“Alright, that’s enough.” Bruce’s authoritative voice spoke up.
As the teasing subsided, you felt your eyes burn with happy tears. You made your way over to Damian, your heart swelling with appreciation for his efforts. Kneeling before him, you looked up at him with a smile.
“Damian,” You spoke softly, “Thank you for dressing up. I promise that you’re going to have fun tonight, so don’t worry, okay?”
He looked at you, his expression softening just a fraction, “I suppose it is more bearable with you.” He replied, his tone still carrying that hint of stoicism.
“Just stick with me, and I promise you’ll enjoy every moment.”
~~~
The air was crisp and filled with the sweet scent of autumn as you, Bruce, Damian, Jason, Dick, and Tim strolled down the sidewalk of a beautifully decorated neighborhood in Gotham. Colorful lights adorned the houses, their yards filled with Halloween decorations; skeletons, blow-up decor, and those styrofoam tombstones. Groups of children scampered around, their laughter mingling with the rustling leaves.
Alfred, dressed in his usual Butler attire - though, he claimed that he was dressed as Wadsworth from the movie ‘Clue’ - was stationed in one of Bruce’s cars, waiting for the six of you to arrive back in the car to drive to the neighboring neighborhood; he wasn’t bored, he was probably playing Candy Crush on his phone or something.
Jason, ever the competitive spirit, dashed ahead with Tim and Dick, challenging each other to see who could reach the next house first. Speedrunning the trick-or-treating. While, you walked at a leisurely pace beside Bruce and Damian.
Damian stuck close to you, his empty Halloween bucket that he begrudgingly picked out at Spirit Halloween in his hands. His gaze was mainly focused on the other children as they ran excitedly to their next house, Halloween buckets or pillowcases in hand. You noticed him observing their antics, his brow furrowed in contemplation as he stopped walking.
“You’ve got this, Damian,” You encouraged gently, “Just think about all the candy you’ll get.”
He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, uncertainty evident, “It seems trivial.” He muttered, but his eyes betrayed him, watching as a group of kids ran up to a house.
“Want me to show you?” You asked, “And then you can do it by yourself when you feel comfortable?”
Bruce watched the interaction silently, seeing how patient you were with Damian. You were always so patient with his boys, but especially with Damian. You had always been this way, nurturing and supportive, a steady presence in his and his boys’ lives. He had so much love and gratitude for you.
Damian hesitated but then looked up at you, “Fine.”
“Alright then, let’s go get some candy!” You said with a smile, leading him towards the house before you, Bruce stayed back on the sidewalk, watching with an adoring and approving smile. As you approached the door, you turned to Damian. “So, ring the doorbell, and when they open the door, you have to say ‘trick or treat.’ Then, they’ll put some candy in your bucket, and then you can say ‘thank you.’ Easy-peasy.”
Damian took in your words, nodding a short curt nod, before raising his hand to ring the doorbell. The door swung open shortly after, revealing an older woman.
“Oh, hello, young man.” She smiled, “That’s a wonderful Dracula costume you’re wearing.”
You looked down at him, placing your hand on his shoulder for support as he brought out his bucket, “Trick-or-treat,” He stated, and the woman’s smile widened as she reached into her large bowl of candy; your youngest son watching as she dropped a good, mighty handful of candy into his bucket. “Thank you.” He added, almost too quickly, his shoulders relaxing a little more.
The woman chuckled softly, “Oh, you are very welcome! Happy Halloween!”
As the door shut, Damian turned to you, a hint of pride creeping up in his voice, “I did it.”
“I am very proud of you.” You exclaimed as you both walked back down to the sidewalk, where a very proud Bruce stood. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Rolling his eyes, though, the smallest of smiles tugged at the corners of his lips. “It was tolerable.” He replied, his typical Damian tone returning.
“Well, let’s get some more candy. Don’t want your brothers to outdo you.”
Damian straightened, “I won’t allow that.” He declared, and with a new vigor, he stepped confidently toward the next house; you and Bruce followed behind, watching as he started trick-or-treating on his own.
Bruce glanced down at you, a soft smile forming on his lips. “You really have a way of bringing out the best in him.”
“Damian just needed a little encouragement,” You replied, watching as he confidently approached the next house. “He’s got a good heart underneath that tough exterior.” You smirked lightly, “Just like his father.”
Bruce mimicked your smirk, huffing, his gaze focused on Damian as he rang the doorbell at the next house. “Thank you for always being there for him… For all the boys.” He said, sincerity clear in his voice. He wrapped his arm around your waist, drawing you closer to him.
“Of course, Bruce,” You leaned into him as you both walked down the sidewalk. Damian sped ahead towards the next house, giving Dick, Jason, and Tim a run for their money. “The boys - and Alfred, of course - mean the world to me, just as you do. I love you all so, so much.”
“They love you too. And I love you too.” He leaned down to mutter. You hummed, shutting your eyes briefly as you raised your hand, cupping Bruce’s cheek as he pressed a kiss to your temple. “So,” He sighed out, returning his attention to his children, “Do you think we should implement the parent’s candy tax this year?”
“Let’s figure that out when we get home.” You laughed out, envisioning the lighthearted chaos that awaited you.
As you continued down the sidewalk, you watched Damian dart from house to house, his confidence growing with each ring of the doorbell, and knock on the door. He was gradually gaining on Jason, Dick, and Tim, who were playfully nudging each other out of the way as they grabbed candy from a bowl on someone’s porch.
This Halloween was going wonderfully, and you had a feeling there would be many more like it in the future.
The first time he saw the cat, Jason was returning home from patrol. The rain was pouring down in streets, and he hurried through the storm, eager to get back to you as quickly as possible. The weather made everything difficult—the buildings blurred together, neon signs became unreadable, and the sounds of the city were muffled through his helmet.
But despite the downpour, he didn't miss the small spot of light orange in the corner of his eye. It stood out against the dark, murky colors of the alley it was huddled in. Nestled in a small, soggy cardboard box between two trash bags, something shifted.
What's that?
Jason knew he needed to get home. He was freezing and bone-tired, but his curiosity got the better of him.
What's the worst that could happen?
Turns out, the worst that could happen is making a new, vicious enemy out of a stray cat.
Jason landed swiftly in the dark alley, the shadows swallowing up what little light there was. He approached the cardboard box cautiously and gently lifted the lid, unsure of what he might find inside.
The first thing that caught his attention was a pair of greenish-brown eyes staring back at him, followed by the sight of ginger-striped fur. The creature let out a small, plaintive mewl.
Oh, it’s a cat.
In the box sat a big, angry orange tabby. A very angry orange tabby, actually. The cat gave him a fixed, piercing stare, its fur and tail puffing up as it let out a throaty, warning meow.
Jason instinctively raised his hands, palms open, to show he meant no harm, but it was too late—the cat swiped at him with a paw, claws fully extended!
"Alright, I got the hint! No need for violence, little guy. Well—not so little. I mean, just look at you." Jason chuckled softly, trying to diffuse the tension.
The cat's ears swiveled backward and flattened against its head, its body puffing up even more as it attempted to make itself look bigger, more intimidating.
"Okay, okay. I’ll leave you to... whatever you’re doing."
*****
The second time he saw the cat was when he was with you, just returning from a grocery run.
"Who even says that to a worker? It's not like they set the prices," you huffed, recounting an incident at the 7/11 you both had just visited. An old lady had been loudly complaining about the cost of a few products, taking it out on the poor cashier behind the counter.
"I know, baby, but you put her in her place." Jason wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer. "So, don't worry about it anymore."
"You're right, it's just—" Jason’s ear tuned out your next words as a familiar spot of light orange caught his eye. A pair of greenish-brown eyes glared at him menacingly.
No way... it can't be the same cat...
"Honey? Jay? What's wrong?" you asked, turning to him, trying to catch his attention.
"Huh? Oh, yeah? Sorry," Jason replied, snapping back to reality with a smile. "Something just caught my eye." But when he turned to look again, the cat was already gone.
Annoying little bastard...
"What did?" you inquired, glancing around to spot whatever had distracted him.
"An orange tabby cat that I’ve apparently started a rivalry with." Jason deadpanned.
"You started a what with a what..?" you stammered, clearly confused by his response. But Jason just grabbed your hand and quickly led you away.
*****
The third time he saw the cat was in his apartment. In his goddamn home.
Jason dropped the bag of snacks he’d just bought from the corner shop out of sheer shock. How did the cat find him? Had it followed him? Was this how it spotted him last time near the grocery store? What was this cat’s plan?
Just then, you rounded the corner, emerging from the kitchen with a small bowl of wet cat food in your hands.
Your face lit up when you saw him. "Welcome back!"
"Hi, baby. Who’s this?" Jason pointed to the cat, now holding its tail high with a slight curl at the top. The cat purred softly as it rubbed its head against Jason’s boot.
"Awh! Look, he likes you!" You beamed, your face lighting up with a smile. "Is this the tabby you were talking about? I can’t imagine him being evil at all, isn’t that right?" You squealed with delight, setting the bowl down near the cat.
The cat slowly blinked at you before cautiously approaching the bowl and taking a tentative bite of the food.
Jason tried to ask how the cat got in, where you found it, and why you let it in, but you shushed him.
"Did you just shush me?" he muttered in disbelief, half-laughing.
"I think it’s fate!" you exclaimed. "You found him, he found you, and now he’s here! He belongs with us. Please, Jay, can we keep him?"
Now that was something he never thought he’d hear. Usually, it was Damian asking Bruce to keep some random animal he’d found—not as a pet, of course. Oh no, not at all.
Jason stared at the tabby for a few moments, then at you, with your big smile and pleading eyes staring back at him.
Crap, this is hard. No wonder Bruce never says no to whatever Damian drags into the house. Jason still remembers the cow...
"...Fine."
"Yay!" You celebrated with a little hop.
"How did it even find us?" Jason eyed the cat suspiciously.
"I’m not sure. But you’ve got to get used to him. I think he likes you!" you said as the cat wobbled back over and rubbed its head against Jason’s boot again. "See? Isn’t he adorable?"
Jason sighed softly, then gave you both a small, reluctant smile. "Yeah, he’s a little bit cute, I guess."
"Oh, I almost forgot! We need to name him."
Jason grumbled under his breath. This was going to be a long week—but maybe, just maybe, it might be a tad bit happier than the previous ones.
love tropes with the bat family
characters: bruce wayne, richard "dick" grayson, barbara gordon, jason todd, timothy "tim" drake, stephanie brown, cassandra cain, duke thomas, and damian wayne
bruce wayne
arranged marriage
• the marriage was arranged by his parents and your parents to merge the two most powerful families in gotham, providing both financial stability and social influence. bruce only went along with it because he wanted to honor his parents’ last wishes.
• initially, there's a distance between the two of you. he’s so consumed by his quest for justice and his role as batman, that he doesn’t really have the time to truly get to know you. meanwhile, you’re just trying to understand your role in his life.
• publicly, the two of maintain the appearance of the perfect, high-society couple, attending galas and charity events. behind closed doors, the two of you sleep in separate beds and barely talk to one another.
• alfred becomes a mentor and confidant to the both of you, helping your navigate your new life together and offering uncle iroh level advice.
• it isn’t until you get hurt, that he begins to realize the depth of his feelings for you.
• DEFINITELY says the, "who did this to you?" line.
• this marriage brings a new dynamic to his life. you have your own skills and resources and you become an integral part of his crime-fighting efforts.
• your presence in his life helps him heal emotionally, offering him a sense of family and home. this support strengthens him, making him a more balanced and effective hero.
• you both work towards a shared vision for gotham, combining your immense resources and influence to create lasting change, honoring the legacies of both your families. <33
richard "dick" grayson
you fell first, he fell harder
• charming and attractive, it’s hard to not fall in love with dick grayson. he’ll flirt and send compliments someone’s way, effectively tampering with their feelings. it’s no surprise when you find yourself having romantic feelings for him.
• despite your best efforts to keep your feelings hidden, dick starts noticing the little things—how you laugh at his jokes a bit too eagerly, how your eyes linger on him a bit longer, and how you're always there to lend a hand.
• as you spend more time together, you can't help but be more obvious about your feelings. you find excuses to be near him, offer to help with his missions, and bring him coffee during late-night patrols.
• one day, during a particularly dangerous mission, you do something reckless to save him. that’s the final push he needs to confront and confess his feelings for you.
• ANGRY LOVE CONFESSIONS>>>
• he never noticed you. but now that he had, he couldn't un-notice you.
• once you find your way into his heart, it’s hard for him to let you go. more and more, he starts finding himself constantly wishing for your presence.
• he constantly tells you how much you mean to him and how he can't imagine his life without you.
• this man met you, fell in love with you, and has been falling ever since. <33
barbara gordon
the korrasami trope (i didn’t know what else to call it)
• both of you had feelings for dick, but he ultimately chose you. after he made his decision, she began to act extremely cold towards you.
• despite this, you constantly went out of your way to ensure that she didn’t feel left out. you included her in activities and made an effort to show her that your relationship with dick didn’t have to affect your friendship with her.
• she becomes jealous when she sees you and dick together and for the longest time, she thought she was jealous of you because you were him. she soon realizes that she was actually jealous of HIM because he was with you.
• during the times when dick was busy with his duties as nightwing, the two of you would often find yourselves alone together. these moments of forced proximity brought you closer, and that’s when she started to develop feelings for you.
• you start to notice subtle changes in her behavior around you. she becomes more attentive, goes out of her way to spend time with you, and shows a genuine interest in your well-being.
• she struggles with her feelings for you, torn between her loyalty to dick because of their friendship and her growing love for you.
• girlie is down HORRENDOUSLY for you. <33
Tumblr media
jason todd
enemies to lovers
• you hate jason, he hates you. just the thought of him irritates your whole being, shakes your bones in anger, his name leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.
•this man will NEVER stop bothering you, he likes to see you stressed out and angry, but he lowkey thinks it’s cute that’s why he likes to piss you off.
• you intrigue him, when he started to bother you he was legit hating on you but as time flew by, he somehow liked your attention on him.
• being an annoying piece of shit= your attention.
• despite your differences and the fact that you and jason mixed like oil and water, on in the field, you guys grudgingly tolerated each other, working together to take out your enemies.
• the tension between the two of you is so thick that during mission briefs, bruce has to seat you guys across the room from each other, unless he wants to hear mumbled insults back and forth and glaring between you guys.
• the rest of the bat family teases the two of you relentlessly because they’re convinced that you guys are the perfect match for one another (they’re absolutely right).
• when he finally realizes that he has feelings for you, he tries to convince himself that he doesn’t in fact like you romantically but that he was just admiring your skills in the field.
• he actually finds himself looking out for you on missions, even though he won’t be upfront about it.
• he becomes somewhat awkward to be around, and the rest of the bat family immediately capitalize off this to bully him with it. but regardless, he finds himself drifting towards you a bit more, and picking up on some of your habits. as much as he hates to admit it, he wants to know more about you. <33
Tumblr media
timothy "tim" drake
friends to lovers
• tim heavily values trust and loyalty. as friends, you’ve always been someone he can rely on, whether it's sharing secrets or working through problems together.
• despite being one of his best friends, he isn't overly expressive with his emotions. he shows his affection through small, thoughtful gestures – bringing you coffee, remembering your favorite snacks, or staying up late to help you with something.
• he gradually comes to the realization that he has feelings for you. once it hits him, he begins to avoid you, trying to process everything.
• however, he starts to get like physically sick because he misses you so much. plus, you called him to ask if they'd done anything wrong and the pain in your voice was too much for him to bear.
• it was impossible to ignore the change in his behaviour. for one, he couldn't speak to you in person without his face turning blindingly red. plus, not only does he struggle to look you in the eye, but he is also CONSTANTLY stuttering around you.
• when you decide to confront him about it, he kind of just blurts out that he’s in love to you. much to his genuine surprise (but literally no one else's), you told him that they loved him too.
• sometimes, he feels like an idiot for not saying or doing something about it sooner. you frequently tease him for not having picked up on his own feelings sooner— but for once, he graciously accepts it. <33
stephanie brown
fake dating
• after your ex breaks up with you, steph devises a plan to get back at them and make them jealous.
• the two of you were already best friends so it couldn’t be that hard. right? RIGHT?
• you’re both aware that damian doesn’t buy your little arrangement one bit. he just doesn’t believe that the two of you are dating because you’re such good friends. (and they were roommates!!!)
• steph has this raging pride when it comes to damian, so she’s made it her personal mission to convince him that you and her are actually dating.
• it takes a while for you two to get into the hang of it, but once you do, it’s like a regular routine.
• steph would definitely fall for you first. she’d hide her feelings behind your little charade, until the fake dating stuff starts extending into the time you two share together when no one else is watching.
• she still gravitates towards you on the couch when everyone has left after dinner at your place, pressing kisses to your cheek when she leaves even though everyone else is already gone. there’s no need to continue acting like this but she does.
• the fake dating thing really starts hurting her because she thinks that you don’t really like her like that (you do) but its nice to pretend that you do in those moments, that it’s all real even though it's not.
• the people who know of your secret knows that steph has fallen for you (except for steph herself, and you because you refuse to believe it).
• like, come on, she’s your BEST FRIEND (side eye). the two of you are idiots in love.
• the moment she realizes she’s in love with you is on another one of those dates that you both know you don’t have to go on but still choose to have anyway (your ex is already clearly jealous).
• she’s been getting this small tugging feeling with you a lot over these past few months.
• now she finally realizes it’s because she’s in love with you. <33
Tumblr media
cassandra cain
childhood best friends to lovers
• growing up, you became adept at reading her body language and expressions, creating a deep, intuitive understanding between the two of you.
• as kids, you both trained together, pushing each other to become stronger and better. these sessions were filled with friendly competition, laughter, and mutual support.
• you two had a secret hideout where you would escape to whenever the world felt overwhelming. it was a place filled with memories, laughter, and dreams for the future.
• whenever she had nightmares or struggled with her past, you were always there to comfort her. your presence became a source of peace and security for her.
• you both shared a love for a watching old martial arts films and cooking together. these activities brought you even closer over the years.
• once she was settled into her new life with the bat family, she reconnected with you over lunch and there was a moment where it all clicked. her heart nearly gave out the moment she saw you walk through the cafe door and smiled at her.
• she was in love with you. she had been for a while now. but back then, she had taken your presence for granted. it was something she just expected to be there. but now? now it was different. now it made sense.
• it was a very natural progression from a friendship to a relationship. she felt safe with you, and she never had to worry about being misunderstood. after everything that she’s been through, you were the person who stood by her through all of it. <33
Tumblr media
duke thomas
brother’s best friend
• one thing about you and duke is that you can both take a secret to your grave.
• no one ever finds about him sneaking out of your brother’s room during their weekend sleepovers, to cuddle up to you on your bed.
• no one finds out about the secret dates you go on in the next town over, so that you don’t get caught.
• no one finds out about the secret phones you both use to contact each other.
• if you have to be in the same room together, he’s not even making any eye contact with you. it’s better to ignore each other in public.
• it would be WAY too obvious that the two of you are dating.
• when you guys are seven months into the relationship, cuddling on his bed, he asks "how long do you want to keep us a secret?"
• to which you reply, "not any longer than you want to."
• so yeah, you can both keep a secret– until you decide you want to share it to the world.
• your brother is disgusted, but happy for you. emphasis on disgusted tho. <33
Tumblr media
damian wayne
academic rivals to lovers (except he’s been in love with you this whole time)
• damian has always admired you from afar. everything from your biting wit to your competitive spirit always made his heart flutter. falling in love with you was almost inevitable.
• sarcastic, creative remarks as comebacks to one another’s argument, teasing and joking words that lead to banters and bickering.
you: "are you reading?"
damian: "it’s amazing how you have eyes but never see the use of them."
• you don’t know if it’s due to your clashing beliefs and ideas that you two just can’t get along. or is it because he just refuses to do so? eitherway, he still irks you off in multiple ways. even when it’s just the sound of his breathing.
• the two of you compete against each other in terms of being the best among you, as such your relationship is treated as something simply born and made by a competition, an unnatural way to form a connection with another but that’s just how it is.
• the fact that you two work really well when it comes to projects and research is something that can’t be denied. even when there are countless arguments being shared because of differences in opinion, you two still end up getting the work done flawlessly.
• despite everything, there was never a time that you two have touched on a sensitive subject while arguing or have you two have said anything personal and mean that it crossed the line. it’s just some useless and close-to-nothing banters that always occur— becoming a part of your daily routine.
• and of course, the two of you don’t lose your sense of academic "rivalry" when you two start dating. <33
